I feel kind of left out not being part of any of these social networks. Not that I want to be on them or get involved, but I hear so much about them that I am wondering what exactly they are. So, what exactly is Twitter and what exactly is Facebook, and what is the point of any of them?

Twitter is really stupid and Facebook is slightly less stupid.

Twitter is for constantly sending updates to anyone paying attention to you. "tweets". Basically it's a whole website of "guess what I'm doing", and everyone hears it.
Facebook is more like the full meal deal in terms of networking. Has some practical uses, unlike Twitter.

Are people really that interested in another's life that they have to have an ongoing update?

And, while you explained Twitter what about Facebook?

Apparently some people are addicted to it. I don't understand it. It's really silly.

Facebook... has instant messaging, a form of email, pictures, games, lots of personal information that you can choose to provide. It's a great way to find people you'd forgotten about, or get to know people that you'd not otherwise have a chance to meet.
Friends of friends that you know but never talk to, that sort of thing. Plus people that you knew ten years ago who moved away.
It has the potential to get silly though. People collecting 1000 friends that they don't even know... giving away their address, that sort of junk. You know.

Facebook actually sounds like something interesting. I know many people on it, but was curious to know what it exactly was. Twitter does sound pointless.

I'd recommend getting one of your friends to give you a tour of their account. Lol. It's easier to see all of the potential uses that way, rather than starting up a profile right away. You start out with no friends, and it's kinda overwhelming.
It's definitely got its uses.

People have found me on Facebook that I haven't spoken to in years. Kids from all the youth groups I've run, (that was pretty cool) Someone who had 3rd grade with me, old girlfriends etc.

Just in case you're worried, you don't have to be friends with them either. You have the option of ignoring them if you're concerned about privacy.

Oh it is Father. If there are people that you've ever wondered about, there's a good chance you will eventually find them on Facebook. The downside to Facebook is that it encourages narcissism. I haven't updated my status in 2 months. But like Twitter, some folks update their status (what they are doing) a half dozen times a day.

the best thing about facebook is that there's all these quizzes that you get to take! If you're ever wanted to know which exotic fruit you are, now you can! :woot:

I used to do stuff like that a couple times a week... but then I got really bored of all the applications and stuff. I realized that not only does it not matter to anyone else, it doesn't matter to me either. :P
I'm still a fan of making deep sounding religious comments, especially directed towards atheists. ;) (They're so arrogant. :annoyed: )

Well, maybe, big maybe, I will register knowing I have a lot of family and friends on there already. Wanted to explore it a little to know what I would potentially be getting in to.

I love Facebook. I use it to advertise my business, stay in contact with people, and, yes (gasp) I really appreciate when people update their status frequently. It allows me to stay updated without having to be on the phone 24 hours a day.

In particular, I have found Facebook great for organizing parties and for sending out big news in large quantity :)
