Veils?

I guess any questions have already been answered, but thought I'd reply anyway!

I think it's good for women to have a choice as to whether they should cover their heads or not. I think we're still supposed to, really, but certainly in the UK it's pretty rare to see anyone covering their head at a Novus Ordo Mass. Which is really rather sad, because I think a lot of women are ignorant of their history and feel as though they *need* to resemble men. No offence meant to our brothers, but we're not the same! I stopped wearing a headscarf because although a lot of people paid me much more respect than I was used to - and this was true in the street as well - there were men close to me who saw it as a glorification of women's repression. I wish I hadn't taken it to heart, and been more confident in myself for wearing it, because the choice to cover my hair is *my* choice (as directed by God, obviously!).

For 'forward-thinkers' to say veils repress women is to deny women the very rights these people are supposed to stand for.

Perhaps God wants you to veil to provide a route via which He can inspire the girls at your school, and make them think in more depth about their relationship with Him. I was thinking again about wearing my headscarf, and after your post, I'm definitely going to now! Thankyou!
I think it was Chaya on here that gave me that site. I love it! I got a scarf that's roughly the same colour brown as my hair, since I was a bit self-conscious at first, but now I wouldn't mind having some others, too. Just some simple colours. I could always go with the liturgical colours. ;)
Yesterday, as I was about to respond to this, my WiFi went down...but what I wanted to say was, I placed an order with Tzinous! I got a couple scarves plus a tunic and their parachute skirt. :smokey:

Please take note of what I said. I said *I* think they are hideous. I didn't say people shouldn't wear them. I also think the color orange is hideous but many people love that color. I don't have to modify anything. If you like the veils, so be it. I don't. No need for you to be personally offended over my personal preferences.

Now I have a mental image of patriotic Dutch women on pilgrimage to Rome decked out in orange mantillas :lol_roll:

Devil's Advocate:
One of the purposes of the veil, I thought, was to steer attention away from the hair of the woman which could be considered a temptation to men. If it is suppose to steer attention away from the person, what is the point of wearing it if people will be distracted by you wearing it?

The old thread linked below answers many of the questions being brought up in this thread:

Maybe it's like the pink mountain thing - if you paint a mountain pink, you shouldn't notice it unless out of the corner of your eye. According to Douglas Adams.

I think he was using it as a really abstract way to say "people ignore the obvious". I wore a black headscarf and I got more attention than I got wearing a lime green one. *shrugs*

If it were me, I'd assume a lime green one was a fashion statement, and a black one to be 'nun-like' if I didn't know anything about headscarves.

It offended me because it sounds like you're saying we're putting an hideous article on our heads. I don't mind you giving your opinion but must you give it in such a hurtful manner?

I wear mine partly because I am kind of vain about my hair. Also, they are only distracted because (a) they hate traditionalists trying to bring back the practice of wearing a veil, or (b) because they're not familiar with the practice of wearing a veil and are curious, or ( c ) veils sometimes stand out, esp. white ones. I personally don't wear it to keep the men around me from lusting after me. I think times have changed and the feminine mystic is slowly disappearing. They aren't going to get all excited if they see my hair. It's more for my own spiritual discipline. I sometimes worry about my outward appearance more than I'd like. I can't be bothered by those who get distracted by a head covering. At least Im not distracting people with a mini skirt or low neckline.

P.S. a little boy in my parish saw me wearing my veil and asked his dad if I was an angel

I'm not going to deny vanity. Apart from following the schedule of white prior to marriage and black after, I'm not really sure how best to do it, and both those colours are 'Nun colours'.

St. Paul told the Corinthinan women to cover their heads because women in the city left their heads uncovered to let men know they were for sale.

This makes a great deal of sense. Thank you.
