Vagina Monologues

In the Notre Dame thread, someone made the point that the school had the Vagina Monologues. What is the problem with that? Do they promote sex with anyone? Lesbianism? Is it just that they discuss vaginas in public and maybe the idea that sex could give pleasure for the woman?

It's been performed at my secular women's college for the past two years. Students have sold chocolate vaginas, candy vaginas, and t-shirts to raise money for battered women. One girl tried again and again chasing me down to buy something. I refused. When it was being promoted this year they made signs around campus where they took feathers or whatnot to form the shape of a vagina.

I believe the problem with that particular "play" is that it is crude, degrading to women, and disrespectful of what is sacred (i.e, sex.)

Even if I didn't have an issue with the graphic descriptions of masturbation and lesbian sex, I have trouble with the idea of reducing important things for women like identity, independence, self-esteem, to sex. Not sexuality, but sex. I also disliked the blatant male-bashing/hating stuff it included.

Someday I want to write a play where women are living out theology of the body's feminine genius, where at least some men will be honorable, and the issue of promoting violence against women will be promoted the way that it should be.

I do find it interesting that a play that included a statutory rape as a good thing in the long run is used to fund anti-violence campaigns.

the play is pornographic and crude, like the above posters said. planned parenthood is hosting it in my city. i could throw up.

I know! In the original version it actually has the victim say, "Well if it was a rape then it was a good rape." It doesn't make sense to me how this play is used to promote awareness of violence against women and to promote respect for them.

I once saw on the web board of my school's website where someone was encouraging people to attend the Vagina Monologues and she actually was telling the young ladies at my school how "you are the proud owner of a vagina." It was sick.

I don't find it the slightest bit flattering to be called a vagina like in this play. I don't feel at all liberated from saying the word vagina. I am not a vagina, I am a woman.

If they went around telling guys that they were the proud owner of a "pickle," there would be more complaints.
