Lounge Daddy
Yet again the so-called "fourth estate" lets us all down. The press only tells us what the State tells them to tell us. Not in a conspiratorial way, but out of journalistic laziness. Maybe others had different exposure to the story than I did. But the view I got from the press was pretty much only what the Federal Government told the press. And we all know how trustworthy the Federal Government is right? What I saw from the press was that some evil Muslim pirates from that horrible place called Somalia were stealing ships and... well, that's all I saw in the press. I think I may have also seen a suggestion that the ships had radio-active junk and the evil Muslims might sell them to someone wanting to make a dirty bomb that do bad things to a city. The rest of the story. Our Government, with the help of the UN made Somalia what it was ...right up until after the civil war. When there was a Government in Somalia, the US liked it. Partly because the old Somali Government was allowing the US to dump radioactive materials on their shores. Remember the issues we had roughly the time the old Somali State collapsed? We were wondering what to do with all this radioactive waste, and our Government wanted to put it in a mountain. The timing wasn't a coincidence. Some of the Somalis became pirates to protect their families, because ships were still trying to show up and dump radioactive materials on their homes. Frankly, I don't blame them. A great "other side of the story" is presented in this video. It's an interview with a guy named K'Naan, a Somali rap artist (now living in Montreal). It was recently posted up at Bureaucrash Social, on an Agorist group page. Sometimes it might feel nice to think we have everything figured out, especially if that formula in our heads doesn't include our own Government being the initial aggressors. But often times its better to learn the truth.

Nihil Obstat
To be quite honest, considering that piracy appears to be the only paying job around there right now, I'm not about to condemn them. From the sounds of it, they treat their prisoners quite decently (for the most part), and while it's still very much illegal and dangerous... I just have a hard time entirely denouncing them. After all, they aren't breaking any laws in their own country.....

I believe talk like a pirate day is September 14... let me look it up. 19th. I was close. I always forget about it.
Lounge Daddy
Still again -- the Somali Pirates, defending their homeland, haven't killed anyone. This, even though some of them have been killed. And now the US is considering attacking their land bases. Also, the US is going to use this as an excuse to prop up another Somali State that will be friendly to us. Probably this means a dictatorship that will allow us to dump toxic waste in their country. Disgusting.
VoTeckam
I am sorry... am I missing something? Even if they have not yet killed anyone they hold guns to people's heads. THey take hostages. You do not have to condone their behavior to condemn the conditions in Somalia. Edited April 13, 2009 by VoTeckam

While I don't agree with everything about their actions--I do largely condone what they are doing. They are defending their families. There's a good reason they are doing what they are doing. Having good reasons to steal and rob at gunpoint is not good enough. Ends ethics is not Christian Ethics.
