I will have you know that I was eating a grapefruit last night, and one part had half a seed stuck in it, and I actually thought of this thread and quickly removed the seed.

[quote name='picchick' post='1837437' date='Apr 16 2009, 01:16 PM']Good argument...I am researching it. Although seeds germinate without sunlight. They need water and warmth. It isn't until they sprout out of the ground that they start to use photosynthesis. The sprout could have used the nutrients in the seed. The tree then could have started dying because it used its stores.

Precisely. It would have died on it's own eventually. It was probably relying on the nutrients stored in its cotyledons to stay alive.

Nihil Obstat

After thinking about it, I'm sure it has something to do with the small piece being an evergreen type.l

I was having a side thought on this...the picture looks like a branch or a tiny Christmas tree that got chopped down. But if he inhaled it, wouldn't it start out by germinating first? -- where are the roots?

Maybe it is behind the actual tree.

The picture could be bigger than what it is. Kinda like a cereal box. The image appears larger to show texture. Except this isn't yummy like cereal.

Heck, for all I know this could be a hoax but who knows.

It looks like a branch sprout. When they're light green they're edible. I've eaten them several times, but how it got into his lung I don't know.

Someone raised that question in the article comments... apparently some plants don't need sunlight to take root. I guess an evergreen might not need light... at least til a certain stage.
