I've read that, too.

I'm not looking foreward to it if they ask too many intrusive questions. It's none of their business how many toilets we have.
Say you use the bushes and thenif you feel fancy you go to the neighbors.

Last time I wasn't old enough to fill out the census... what is it like? Is it just like a really long survey?

While I'm pretty sure its harmless I think it might be the weapon they will need to create weird stuff to tax if you have too much of something or count as a terrorist if you seem too pro-life or something. :banned:

I don't remember anything like that on the last census I did in 2000. We do the census every year here.

It varies. There are regular forms and then some people randomly get the long form.
In 2000 it did not seem like a big deal. I think we did put "human" for race... yeah, I'm pretty sure we did that. And we had an exchange student living with us and we had to figure out how to have her on there (yes, EVERYONE gets counted).

In '90 I was in college living in the dorms. I cannot remember if my roommate and I got one or if our whole dorm had one.... beats me. It would have been funny though... "How many toilets?" Um... in this 15 x 15 room? zero...

Oh-ho... but that's a violation of the law. By law you HAVE to answer all the questions. :annoyed:

The census is used to help with planning things like roads and schools and can be very useful so I think that answering truthfully would be a good idea. The only objection I have to it is that they ask your name - and I don't think this is necessary in order to use this as a planning document, so I have always used an alias, and then answered all of the other questions truthfully.

Everyone gets the short form this time. The long form is only going to be used in the annual American Community Survey, which is a much much smaller sample.

Essentially. You won't fill it out if you are still at home with your parents. It's usually the head of household.

I work at a plan commission. We use census data for all sorts of stuff: transportation planning, zoning, long-range planning, etc. It is incredibly important. As for the name bit, the Census Bureau only aggregates data to the block level. It is impossible for planners (or the general public) to isolate a person information based on census data.

edit: That's census block rather than street block, for those that might not know.

At some times, they can be a bit of fun...

During the most recent census, our home address was 8326 Whatever Ave, my closest neighbor was at 8322 Whatever.

We had an outbuilding which the census taker presumed had to be number 8324 and she was fixed in her belief that the outbuilding was a mother-in-law apartment we were "trying to keep secret."

This year, I am tempted to park our RV on the front lawn, hang laundry from the mirrors and  door handles, etc to make it look as if a family of 87 is living in it.

Should be fun...
