Breaking: Robert Carlson is the next Archbishop of St. Louis!
As reported on American Papist last night (and rumored back in March), Bishop Robert Carlson of Saginaw, MI has been named the 10th bishop of St. Louis.

St. Louis Archdiocesan website:

Bishop Robert J. Hermann, Archdiocesan Administrator for St. Louis, called Archbishop-elect Carlson “a very energetic, articulate, warm and gifted pastor and administrator. He thinks and works with the Church he loves, and will continue to build upon the legacy of his predecessors here in St. Louis.”Archbishop–elect Carlson was installed as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Saginaw on February 24, 2005 at the direction of Pope John Paul II. A native of Minneapolis, MN, he was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1970 for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis. He was later ordained as an auxiliary bishop for his home archdiocese on January 11, 1984 and went on to serve as Bishop of Sioux Falls, SD, from 1994 to 2005.

Though not from his diocese, I've heard nothing but good thing about Bishop Carlson (mostly from seminarians from the diocese of Saginaw)

------------------

SHREWSBURY -- At his first meeting with his new flock, Archbishop-elect Robert J. Carlson first shook hands with the media and some of his priests.

In a press conference in front of about 200 people at the Cardinal Rigali Center in Shrewsbury, Carlson was, by turns, emotional and funny and seemingly very comfortable in the spotlight.

He said he was "blessed by all who've gone before me" as St. Louis bishops.

Carlson recalled one visit to St. Louis with a bus full of Catholic youths during 1999's papal visit when he got all the way to St. Louis but couldn't get tickets to the papal Mass. And he waved to the Pope-mobile as it went by.

"I just visited the Cathedral," he said this morning, "and they let me in this time."

Pope Benedict XVI has named Carlson as the next Roman Catholic archbishop of St. Louis.

Carlson is 64 years old and a Midwesterner — though one with no local roots. He has led the Saginaw, Mich. diocese since 2005. He will be the 10th ordinary, or leader, of St. Louis Catholics since 1827.

Carlson, a veteran administrator with 25 years’ experience leading dioceses, succeeds Archbishop Raymond Burke, whose four-and-a-half year tenure as St. Louis Catholic leader ended in June when the pope named him to lead the Vatican’s supreme court. Like Burke, Carlson is trained as a canon, or church, lawyer.

"I am grateful for having had the opportunity to worship, pray, and serve with the dedicated priests, religious, deacons, and lay faithful of the Diocese of Saginaw during the past four years," Carlson said in a statement from the Saginaw diocese.

Bishop Robert Hermann, who has served as interim leader of the St. Louis Archdiocese since Burke was named as a Vatican official, said in a statement that he’d known Carlson for a number of years.

"He is a very energetic, articulate, warm and gifted pastor and administrator," Hermann said. "I am most deeply impressed with his energy and zeal for evangelization. I eagerly look forward to working with and for him."

Carlson was born in Minneapolis, Minn. where he was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1970. He was later ordained as an auxiliary bishop for his home archdiocese on January 11, 1984 and went on to serve as bishop of Sioux Falls, S.D., from 1994 to 2005.

In 2003, the Weekly Standard reported that Carlson sent a letter to then-minority leader and abortion-rights supporter Tom Daschle asking the U.S. senator from South Dakota to stop using the word "Catholic" to describe himself in campaign materials. Daschle then stood on the floor of the U.S. Senate in Washington and denounced Carlson for speaking in a way "more identified with the radical right than with thoughtful religious leadership."

Carlson earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from St. Paul Seminary in 1966, a master’s degree in divinity from St. Paul Seminary in 1976 and a Licentiate in Canon Law from the Catholic University of America in 1979.

During his four years in Saginaw, Carlson focused on five priorities for ministry, according to the Saginaw diocese’s statement: vocations, Catholic Schools, service to the poor, stewardship, and evangelization.

"When he arrived in Saginaw, the diocese had two seminarians discerning the vocation to the priesthood," according to the statement. "During the past two years, more than 20 men have been enrolled as seminarians." Carlson has ordained eight priests since June 2007 and plans to ordain three more on June 5.

The date of Carlson’s installation has not yet been determined, according to the statement, though according to canon law, his installation must take place within the next two months. Until then, Carlson will continue to be the diocesan administrator in Saginaw and Hermann will continue to lead the St. Louis archdiocese in consultation with Carlson.

The new archbishop-elect will be introduced publicly at a press conference at 10:30 a.m. at the Rigali Center in Shrewsbury.

Bishop Carlson was here in the Twin Cities when I was growing up. He ran a house for St Thomas students when I was in college. One of my friends lived there and I'd go over for dinner and mass sometimes. And yeah, he lived there and ran the community in the house. (BTW it was a coed house and it was as orthodox as you can be) He's a great guy publicly and he's a fantastic guy one on one. He was very very focused on young adults here.

St Louis is very lucky to have him! I have nothing but great memories of Bishop Carlson.

Brother Adam

We are very sorry to see him go, he is an excellent bishop and man of God. If you know anything about the history of the Diocese of Saginaw you can understand his new appointment though.
