does anyone know how i can make that happen? I'd need to get a job that you only have to have a high school diploma that i can pay for an apartment with and also a cheap community college that i can attend.

any ideas?

i've been totally against people moving to my area because of fear of overdevelopment...

...but the more I think of it, the better it would be if more phatmassers converged down here!

MCTS, you can try to apply at Texas State University in San Marcos. They have a program for employees, they'll pay for all your tuition fees if you decide to go to school here.....

it might be a little hard to find a position on campus that accepts only highschool grads, though...but you might get lucky! I'll write a letter of rec for you! :)

umm if Texas State is going to pay for tuition for employees, then isn't it highly likely the employees are only high school grads? :)

MCTS, I don't know if I can help you directly, but education in TX is cheap compared to every other state - and I have confidence you could get a decent job. Especially if you tell people you're trying to pay your way through college. That looks a little better than just a high school grad looking for a job.

I would really look at the big cities - there are tons of opportunities there. UNT is north of Dallas\Fort Worth - Denton is a pretty reasonable size "college town" that probably has a good amount of jobs. My uncle worked his way through school there. Houston has HCCC and UH. San Antonio has SACC, UTSA. Then there are smaller towns here and there with schools. Huntsville has Sam Houston, San Marcos has Texas State. Go for it!

no....

the majority of employees have degrees. You kinda have to if you are working in higher education...but for those of us who want our Master's, Doctorals, and wish to pursue Grad School, there is excellent financial assistance for employees......for the few who do not have their bachelor's, they have the opportunity as well...

hmm I just assumed that a majority of student worker positions were filled by those with only a high school degree?

MCTS.. one other option...

College Station is home to Texas A&M. Now A&M may be out of your budget\time commitment because it is a large university... BUT in the same town is Blinn Community College. That also means you have access to many of the benefits of a college town while not attending A&M. Meaning... cheap stuff and lots of jobs!!

Rent in College station is probably 1/3 or 1/2 of what I pay now in Houston... Seriously I am floored every time I drop my rent in the mail and remember when I paid 1/2 as much for a 10x nicer apartment. There are tons of jobs there specifically for college kids. Since so many leave during the summer or after their 4, 5, err 6 years, there are always openings around. College station is about 1 1/2 hours from downtown houston.

Plus A&M has an amazing Catholic student ministry which many of the Blinn students participate in as well. Very orthodox, very active!

...you know, we're not on the same page...i totally understand what you are talking about now! :topsy:

yup, most student workers are in fact students who are pursuing their bachelor's...i was taking it from my perspective as professional employees within the university administrative system...which is not what mcts is referring to....she wants to be a student-worker....

mcts, you can come to school here and get great financial aid...come work for me in my office! :)

I'm up for anything right now. heck, now I'd even settle for a move across town. I need a change. preferably bigger than 15 minutes away.

When it comes to jobs where you only need a high school diploma, assuming you don't have a marketable trade like carpenter or mechanic, there is either low pay, or high risk, or difficult work environment. Since you only plan to do it while going to school, you don't have to do it forever. A lot of security companies will pay for your training period, and then put you to work. That can work around a school schedule. Weiser and Wells Fargo I think both hire in Texas. There are always openings doing things like roofing crews or asphalt crews that have high turn over, especially in summer when Texas gets really hot. You probably wouldn't have any energy left over to take school after doing hot tar all day though.

I'm a girl. And as a side note- I don't know why I always assign a gender to people here from their avatar and conversation even if they don't leave any gender hints. I assumed you were a girl also. I'm no hussy. lol.
