socalscout
No one has mentioned Austin. Come on down here and go to ACC for your first 2 years and by the time you are done with that you should be a resident (costs less) then transfer to UT. As far as jobs go we have more bars and restaurants per capita than any other state and Dell and Apple are always hiring contract work if you do not mind phone sales/support. It’s awesome here and that is coming from someone who moved here from San Diego!(because San Diego is the best city ever)

Thomist-in-Training
Too bad that the University of Dallas is so flipping expensive.
Yeah, but there's scholarships. Dallas is kinda ugly though. WAIT, I know! In Fort Worth, there's a little bitsy Catholic college that costs $1000/semester. Dunno if they're accredited. College of St Thomas More. http://www.cstm.edu/ When I say tiny, I mean they probably have less than 50 students in the whole school, but I think it's good quality.
The College of St. Thomas More is one of only 21 Catholic colleges and universities recommended in The Newman Guide to Choosing a Catholic College. The Guide, published by The Cardinal Newman Society in November 2007, recognizes those institutions which are most faithful to their Catholic identity.
Hmm, I guess housing costs almost as much as tuition, but you wouldn't have to live there I think:
Student Residences The College has limited residential facilities at 3000-3004 Merida Avenue and 3001, 3005, and 3015 Lubbock Avenue. Student Housing is a privilege to be enjoyed by students in good standing with the College. Payment must be made according to the schedule published by the bursar, and lease agreements are governed by the policies published by the bursarís office and the Student Handbook. The 2007-2008 Rates for Student Housing are as follows: Fall 2007 (August 15- December 31) $2,050 due on or before August 30 or 5 monthly payments of $410 (August 30 through December 15) plus $200 Security Deposit due on or before August 30 Spring 2008 (January 1- May 31) $2,050 due on or before January 15 or 5 monthly payments of $410 (January 15- May 15)
I'm not sure about jobs in Fort Worth, but it's prettier than Dallas. Looks like CSTM has continuous adoration Thursday evening till Monday. Huh.
pat22
i've been totally against people moving to my area because of fear of overdevelopment... ...but the more I think of it, the better it would be if more phatmassers converged down here! MCTS, you can try to apply at Texas State University in San Marcos. They have a program for employees, they'll pay for all your tuition fees if you decide to go to school here..... it might be a little hard to find a position on campus that accepts only highschool grads, though...but you might get lucky! I'll write a letter of rec for you!
I live in Willis TX and we have the same fear!!

she_who_is_not
I want to move to Texas too!!!! But I really don't know how to get down there. No Texas law firms interview at my school and I really don't see the point of doing blanket cover letters. San Antonio is my town!! God bless Texas!
Hey! I didn't know there were any Austinites on Phatmass with me!!! We gotta hang out sometime! Austin was my choice when I moved! It is one of the top 5 most educated cities in the U.S., actually. And despite its highly-educated status, this town is in fact full of hippies, musicians, clubs and restaurants. There is a lot of work for those going to school. And Austin Community College (ACC), St. Edwards University, and the University of Texas (UT) at Austin are all excellent schools. And though the River Walk in San Antonio does take the cake, it is only an hour away! Austin is a very health conscious city, too. Lots of hike and bike trails and sports organizations. If I had college to do over again by myself, I'd have come to Austin in a heartbeat! Edited April 29, 2009 by abercius24
