Sojourner
I am one 30-page paper, three written finals, and one oral exam away from being DONE with law school! I had my last class this afternoon and I am now in the home stretch. I opted to finish up my master's in Catholic Studies next semester; I just couldn't do the paper and get it reviewed and graded and presented still this semester. Too much happened and I was too far behind. It'll be a better paper if I wait to finish it, and I can still graduate and get the J.D. and take the bar this summer. I can hardly believe it's almost done, and I can hardly believe all the stuff that has happened since I made the decision to start law school. I moved to MN, made new friends, lost friends, worked a couple of jobs, moved twice, met a guy, fell in love, planned a wedding, got married, bought a house, and am almost done with a J.D., and one class short of the M.A. What a trip. God has been so gracious to me through the whole thing, and I know he'll continue to provide grace as the journey enters a new phase.
CatherineM
I know the feeling. I don't remember exactly what happened after my last exam. One of my classmates rented a limo, and had a keg in the back. That afternoon is kind of a blur.

I plan to be celebrating most of that day/night/the next morning.
Are you going to practice?
Probably. I won't be able to until I pass the bar, of course, and I won't find out until October. I am taking it, though, and I'll probably either start up something on my own or with a couple of friends. The job market is super tight right now. Plus we are hoping to have children, and we'd like me to have the option of staying home with them and working from home or working part-time. I am learning, though, that when I have the "perfect" plan it nearly always goes awry.
congrats! That was a few months before I became Catholic -- just over FIVE YEARS ago! haha It's amazing how much changes in such a short amount of time. I have a friend who started a practice in that area and has more work than he can handle, so I might work with him for a while. Seriously, jobs are hard to come by at the moment, so solo is an increasingly attractive option. I'm lucky, because my husband does well enough in his business that I have flexibility in starting my own. We'll see how it goes.

I guess were blessed with many law suits here? I'm doing admiralty work this summer - a bit excited! We have a consumer protection center at our law school. I think I've seen my profs books at Barnes and Noble about consumer protection law. Richard Alderman is his name - I think hes our dean now too? CatherineM
I came out of school during a nasty economy. I had a day job, but scrambled to do stuff after hours. I made more money doing disability appeals for Social Security than anything, but also did wills and DUI stuff. When the economy is bad, bankruptcies are also a growth industry. I volunteered with Legal Aid, and from that I was allowed to take their symposiums and CLE courses for free. When you have to start logging CLE, you will be amazed at how expensive they are. Big law firms pay for you to go, but solos don't get that option.

That should be really fun. I'm not familiar with the Houston market, but I know a lot of firms (not just in MN) are laying off lawyers left and right. I have a couple of friends who were slated to start at decent sized firms in the fall have their start dates put off until January. No one who has a job has lost it yet, but it's been tough going for lots of folks.
I came out of school during a nasty economy. I am already planning on doing some volunteer work, partly for the reason you suggest. I know CLEs can be super expensive.
