Positive Stem Cell Research

Recommended Posts

Some scientists have claimed to have developed a better and safer way to develop stem cells from adult skin cells. Here is the article:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124052511315450037.html

"California scientists have found a new technique for "reprogramming" adult skin cells, so that the cells mimic the ability of embryonic stem cells for developing into different sorts of body tissue. Although the promising results in medical research using stem cells have come almost exclusively from studies using adult stem cells, scientists continue to seek support for embryonic stem-cell research because the embryonic cells are more adaptable. The prospect of making adult cells equally adaptable could eliminate the argument for destructive embryo research."

This could be a major develepment in ethical stem cell research.

Yep. And Oprah didn't like it and buried it on her website. :lol_roll:

There was a thread on Open Mic on this.

This is really old news. However, people are hiding it for whatever reason.

It is not only safer but more effective.

Thank you for bringing it up again. It NEEDS to be advocated and gotten out there.

spite.

just kidding, but one has to wonder. Maybe picchick knows more about the pro-murder response to this sort of research. One gets the sense that destroying embryonic stem cells and claiming that they cause cures is used to justify abortion on their side, which of course is malicious.

I don't know. I would have to agree with you because I do not see any other reason. Just plain spite.

Adult Stems cells are PROVEN to be more effective...safer.

Embryonic is not. There have been cases in the Middle East and in Russia where deadly tumors arose from the use of embryonic stem cell use.

My other thought is that they want to MAKE embryonic stem cells work. They know that Adult stem cells will work...now they want to figure out a way to make embryonic stem cells work.

However, we are in a recession...we are complaining about the cost of health care...how to get health care to people...and yet the President wants to pour money into researching something that does not work rather than something that will work.

How many lives will be saved using adult stem cells now rather than waiting for embroyonic stem cell efficacy? How much will people's quality of life increase now rather than waiting?

Maybe it's more expensive or something...
This might be it.

You have the issue of needing donors. Embryos are a dime a dozen.

The patient's own skin cells are used, so that's not even an issue. Of course, all this stuff is in development, and I don't think there are reports yet of successful treatments from stem cells developed out of skin cells. They have to take it one step at a time and R&D is always a slow process.

I think the issue is money. The problem with ESCR is the same as with organ donation--it's foreign tissue so you have to find a way to make the cells unrejectable. The scientist who can figure out the process to do that is going to be rich. With adult stem cell research, there are plenty of cures but no profit. It's disgusting how much the health care system is controlled by greed. I think perfecting the technique for using skin cells is something similar--money is involved--but without the ethical qualms. Using existing adult stem cells doesn't make any money.

Another thing: cord blood cells? They've been proven to be incredibly effective, and because it's from a newborn the cells are also pretty young and I think almost totipotent (could be wrong). Think of how many babies are born in a day--if you are able to store all that and have a worldwide database, you're guaranteed to be able to find a match. The problem with organ donation (and bone marrow donation) is that there aren't enough people willing to donate, so there's not a lot of selection. Matches are harder to come by because there's less to match with. However, with cord blood banks, there would be tons of options, and the more selection you have, the better your chances are of finding a match. However, again, there's no money in this--only cures.

I am not talking about the treatment phase yet. I am talking research phase still. To get donors for that.

I do not know of successful treatments from adult stem cells. I do know of unsuccessful treatments from embryonic stem cells. I do know that there have been sucessful breakthroughs using adult stem cells. Where do you put your money?

I think it's more that they desperately want to prove to themselves that abortion can ever be good, so they are against anything that could prove that wrong.
