I dunno. For one thing, all Governments love it when something bad happens. The Political Class looks for opportunities to sweep in and become the solution to the problem, and problem... even ones that Government caused in the first place.

So I am skeptical when problems get talked up by Government officials. And also the news media wants to get you to watch more news -- so I don't trust them either.

And then, stuff like this comes out. "Only 7 swine flu deaths, not 152, says WHO."

Mexico is standing by the 159 deaths, remember this started in March down there, many of the people are buried. I am following the story on google map community. The best explanation of what is going on is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swine_flu_2009

All the UIL events have been postponed until further notice; track regionals, academic state meet, etc. Kinda scary...

Here's my question: how do you know if it is not just the flu or if it is swine flu? My pastor is really sick, with vomiting, chills and "other stomach troubles"

If he has it, it was nice knowing everyone, because with a heart problem that complicates things a bit....

lab tests.

There is currently no evidence that this swine flu is more deadly than the regular flu...

What? really... interesting.

:sadder:

My biggest "fear" is knowing that I need to protect my children the best that I can, and not being sure how to do that.... balancing caution vs. living life. Right now we are living life, but at what point do we get more cautious?

With those symptoms and a heart condition he should definitely see his MD tomorrrow, any kind of flu can kill you.

Google is 1-2 weeks ahead of CDC for tracking flu incidence:
Each week, millions of users around the world search for online health information. As you might expect, there are more flu-related searches during flu season, more allergy-related searches during allergy season, and more sunburn-related searches during the summer. You can explore all of these phenomena using Google Insights for Search. But can search query trends provide the basis for an accurate, reliable model of real-world phenomena?

In the United States we have found a close relationship between how many people search for flu-related topics and how many people actually have flu symptoms. Of course, not every person who searches for "flu" is actually sick, but a pattern emerges when selected flu-related search queries from each state and region are added together. For the United States, we compared our query counts with data from a surveillance system managed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and found that some search queries tend to be popular exactly when flu season is happening. By counting how often we see these search queries, we can estimate how much flu is circulating in various regions of the United States. Our results have been published in Nature.

During the 2007-2008 flu season, an early version of Google Flu Trends was used to share results each week with the Epidemiology and Prevention Branch of the Influenza Division at US CDC. Across each of the nine surveillance regions of the United States, we were able to accurately estimate current flu levels one to two weeks faster than published CDC reports.
They're publishing unverified Mexico data now.

My cousin goes to one of the schools in Michigan where they think it struck (Woodhaven High School). The kid that they think has it just got back from a trip to Mexico.
Although difficult to assess, these annual epidemics [of regular influenza] are thought to result in between three and five million cases of severe illness and between 250 000 and 500 000 deaths every year around the world.
So how is this worse than regular flu? Is it that it can spread from human to human when it previously couldn't?
