The following is from a fact sheet from our local Catholic hospital about past swine flu outbreaks in the US

Like seasonal flu, swine flu in humans can vary in severity from
mild to severe. Between 2005 until January 2009, 12 human
cases of swine flu were detected in the U.S. with no deaths
occurring. However, swine flu infection can be serious. A swine flu
outbreak in Fort Dix, New Jersey occurred in 1976 that caused
more than 200 cases with serious illness in several people and
one death.

So it's been present in the US before with more than 200 cases accounted for in a certain area.
This particular variety H1N1 is new and unknown and has not been previousy detected anywhere in the world. There are 278 confirmed cases with 4000 possibles worldwide.

I think some of you are getting it wrong. After speaking to a nurse today she states it is a type A strain droplet virus meaning it is not airborne but spread by saliva or any other secretion which makes it no more contagious than any other flu.
Influenza H1N1 (Swine Flu)
H1N1 (swine flu) is a type of influenza (flu) virus that causes respiratory disease that can spread between people. Most people infected with this virus in the United States have had mild disease, but some have had more severe illness. The symptoms of H1N1 influenza (swine flu) in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu.

What are the signs and symptoms of swine flu in people?
The symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with swine flu. In the past, severe illness (pneumonia and respiratory failure) and deaths have been reported with swine flu infection in people. Like seasonal flu, swine flu may cause a worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions.

How does swine flu spread?
Spread of this swine influenza A (H1N1) virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing of people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.
I think it's a bit strange that antibiotics cannot do any good for a normal flu but they're dishing them out for this swine 'flu'.

Oseltamivir and zanamivir are antivirals, not antibiotics. It is resistant to amantadine and rimantadine. Antibiotics are used only if the patients gets a secondary infection such as pneumonia.
When SARS hit southeast Asia - it had a mortality of 60%.

So yeah - there is reason to take it seriously.
If this thing came anywhere close to the SARS death rate there would be crying that not enough was done. It appears that we got lucky.

On the news last night there were school kids who had been given a/bs...I thought it was weird.

Oh good, another school is giving out Tamiflu. At least they've got it right lol.
It is better to be over prepared - like actually enforcing people to go home when they get sick, making kids wash their hands and throw their tissue paper away after they sneeze.
There was a story last night about a Minnesota school that is closed (because of a supposed swine flu case). They said that even though school was closed, people were at the mall, at the playgrounds, going to movies etc. There is no way to force people to stay in their homes without martial law. Common sense is not all that common.
Agreed, that was the hallmark of the 1918 flu.
The Spanish flu pandemic scares the croutons out of me.
Containing it now also could be a double edged sword if the 1918 senario plays out. If we prevent people from getting it now and it mutates in to something worse, as the 1918 version did, the end result will be worse. There is alot to consider here and in the end it's in God's hands.
It's safe to go out if people sanitize their hands and cover their mouths when they sneeze or cough.

As long as no one sneezes or coughs into someone else's face (or in a closed space like an elevator), hand washing is enough.
