It looks like the first lady is enjoying her new "living large" lifestyle. She has a new pair of $540 shoes.

This issue isn't of major concern to me, but I know those who enjoy watching wardrobe costs would enjoy this. I am sure the same chastisement given to Palin for her GOP issued wardrobe will be equally applied to Michelle.

What kind of sign does wearing $540 sneakers when many Americans are tightening their budgets send? Is she being sensitive to current economic conditions? Shouldn't she be getting her clothes from Walmart? Okay, she is first lady. She can move up to Sears and JC Penny.

I have to wear new sneakers every 3 months because of plantar issues. I don't pay $500 for them, and the local thrift store gets shoes with low miles from me. It's been a long time since I've spent that on a pair of shoes, and then they were custom fitted Ferragamo's. For sneakers, that's just shameful. It's not like they are specialized for an Olympic marathoner either.

Is it just me, or does Michelle seem to have an affinity for ugly things?

of course they don't care about the economy, it's definitely not affecting them or their lifestyle!

"Let them eat cake!"

"Let them pay for Air Force One to go zooming down into New York City.."

"Let their children's children pay for the trillion, kazillion national debt.."

There won't be an outcry. The media has it covered....

I especially thought the stuff that she wore to the inauguration were frumpy. They keep trying to compare her to Jackie Kennedy, but man, she doesn't pick her clothes or wear them the way Jackie did.

No it won't. For the same reasons it wasn't an issue with Laura Bush. Neither built their whole image on being some regular working class joe fighting against those darn "elites" with their $8 salad's and bottled water blah blah blah.

Not to mention that Michelle isin't a cannidate.

As they say here, "You wield the sword you also fall by it"

Don't pretend to be a "Real American" and a populist fighting the washington elites while wearing clothing worth more than what any of those "real americans" make in a year.

Because who doesn't pay five hundred dollars for a pair of custom fitted Ferragamo's?

I fail to see how that's not a gratuitous excess of wealth on some totally unnecessary product while sneakers are.

Perhapse it's a difference of background. I honestly don't know what Ferragamos are. Not that I'm in college I know people from much more impressive family backgrounds but before last year when I started I'm quite sure I didn't know any friends or family who had ever spent almost anything like that on shoes.

So I guess I for one can't see the difference between between spending (or in my oppinion wasting) five hundred dollars on Ferragamos or sneakers.

Anyway she truely isin't

Unlike Jackie she actually made something of herself and wasn't born with a silver spoon in her mouth.

In my case, I had to buy custom made, or literally nothing at all. Women's dress shoes don't come in size 13AAA. As an attorney, I was expected to maintain a certain dress code even if I didn't agree with it.

Jackie's silver spoon disappeared when her parents divorced. She was an accomplished photo-journalist before she met JFK. In her later life she was considered one of the best editors at Doubleday. There are some who believe that she wrote "Profiles in Courage" that JFK won a Pulitzer for. She was hardly an air-headed debutant.

I'm not judging you, I'm just saying I don't see a difference. You were expected to maintain a certain dress code as an attorney. Fair enough, I'd venture to guess the First Lady is as well. In fact I'd venture to guess her dress code and the expectations are a bit more demanding.

You were expected to meet a particular dress code, you had the financial means to meet and so you bought them. I don't see a big difference between that and Michelle's "shameful" actions.

I guess I'll take the outrage here a bit more seriously when either the Catholic Church tones it down a bit or the same outraged individuals here rage against the Church engaging in extravigant spending.

This idyllic childhood came to an end when her parents divorced in 1940.

Her father never remarried. In 1942 her mother married second husband Standard Oil heir Hugh D. Auchincloss, Jr., and they had two children, Janet and James Auchincloss. Jacqueline and her sister Lee then lived with their mother's new family, dividing their time at their stepfather's two vast estates, "Merrywood", in McLean, Virginia, and "Hammersmith Farm", in Newport, Rhode Island. They remained close to their father, and visited him often in New York City, where he lived.

Yeah, I mean having a stepfather with only two vast estates and then going to the nations most prestigious prep schools.

Must have been tough fer her.

Silver sneakers aren't on any dress code except for rapper's arm candy.

I agree that her clothing demands are beyond anything average people are expected to meet. I just about went nuts trying to figure out what to wear to dinner with the Governor General, and that was a once in a lifetime thing. The first lady deals with that practically everyday. That's one of the reasons that I have forbidden my husband from running for office.

I'm one that thinks the church should strip itself of its extravagance. Blood-sucking lawyers would leave us alone if we did.
