TotusTuusMaria
Just because I'm from Alaska doesn't mean there is no racism or black people. I've also been going to school in Ohio for 3 years. There's plenty of black people, and plenty of racism in Alaska. We just don't ever use the word monkey.
Interesting. I had no idea that there was a lot of racism amongst black/white in Alaska... my apologies. How does that play out and why would you say it is there?
To stay on topic: I'd be more worried about the sneakers being given to her as advertising and non USA brand then I would be about how much money she spends on them... the presidency makes something like $400,000 a year. It isn't like they are poor. If she wants to spend her own money on $540 shoes who cares. If it is tax payer money... well that's just stupid but look at where else our tax payer money goes (condoms in school, planned parent hood, abortions in mexico), I doubt it is tax payer money.
i doubt it is tax payer money too. she makes a great deal of dough herself from work she does herself. Interesting about the advertising... I hadn't thought of that. Perhaps. I bet she bought them though, but who knows? I wouldn't mind if she advertised the shoes... even if they are a non-USA brand. HisChildForever
You know, I actually feel bad for Michelle. If she was wearing a simple pair of Nike sneakers, the media would be all over it. "She has a boring fashion sense" and "what was she thinking??" and "she is the First Lady, she should have better taste than that" would be all over the place. Instead of celebrating the charity event, people focused on her expensive sneakers. Seriously?? Yes, seriously. The First Lady, in my opinion, is ALWAYS scrutinized when it comes to fashion. Believe me, even if she was wearing a "between" pair of sneakers (not inexpensive but not expensive either) there would be criticisms.
Well... in my 22 years of life I have maybe a half dozen times heard monkey used as racist. Monkey makes me think of GWB faster then a black person.
It does not matter HOW many times you have heard it. A racial slur is a racial slur. BG45
To agree with Erin and bring Jackie O back up, the media totally went after Jackie O's degrading fashion sense as she got older. She wasn't even the First Lady still.
kamiller42
Okay, while it is ridiculous to buy a pair of sneakers for that price, if we begin to really examine our purchases we will ALL find something we probably could do without. Contact lenses, treating yourself to that new sweater, any and all beauty products. Should we feel guilty when we buy these things with our money?
My question was tongue in cheek for Hassan. I don't think she is being insensitive for wearing overpriced sneakers just as I don't think Palin wearing nice clothes disqualifies her for speaking for all Americans as Hassan asserted during the wardrobe "scandal."
Besides, the sneakers may be WORTH that much money, but how much did she PAY for them? The price would have gone down significantly if the sneakers were on sale and she had a coupon, perhaps she had a gift card.
Sneakers worth $540? Hmm, highly doubt it. It better have real gold trim somewhere. They remind me of clown shoes. The First Lady using a coupon? I doubt the stores where they sell those shoes even take coupons.
So basically you're saying that if she didn't pay for those shoes, and the taxpayers didn't pay for those shoes, then the entire point of comparing her expensive shoes to Sarah Palin's campaign wardrobe that the original post was trying to make is a false analogy?
The point of the original post was not the source of funds, but what kind of message does wearing $540 sneakers send to Americans who are experiencing "the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression "? As Hassan put it, the Palin wardrobe "scandal" was not about a woman wearing nice clothes. The scandal was the appearance of living large during hard times and claiming to represent all Americans. To some, you can't represent all Americans unless your clothes are from Walmart or Target. Edited May 4, 2009 by kamiller42

(Who would have even cared to notice her footwear during a charity event??) There would have been no "message" sent to Americans if this were the case. And if we want to talk "economic crisis" - the First Lady loves J.Crew. I can only imagine that helps their business. (During the campaign, Michelle wore dresses from my store. People were calling into our dress department and coming in to look for dress X and Y that she wore.) Makes me wonder how many of these $540 sneakers have been sold since that charity event. Obviously, this NY Daily News reporter won't be standing at attention when Obama enters the room. Kudos. Michelle probably spurred some sales. The French thank her. She isn't the only woman in politics who can generate sales.
