they slaughtered hundreds of em somewhere in europe because of the paranoia. The story came up on the nightly news. It was so sad watching all of em running for their lives...even the little piglets were squealing and they had no where to run to escape.... of course, this was going to be their demise, eventually, but not on the scale it was carried out... Excelsior1027
The priest at mass here on Sunday basically said the first part, "may the peace of the Lord be with you all," but then didn't say the part after that. There was an awkward silence, and then went right into the Lamb of God.
The sign of peace is optional. My pastor only does it at the weekend Masses. We did the "no shaking hands" thing at Mass, too. Except when I sit up front there's never anyone within arm's length besides my brother, so it won't really matter for me. We do the same thing during regular cold and flu season, too, though.
southern california guy
I agree with you guys and I sort of wonder why so called "swine flu" has been blown so out of proportion. It's basically just cold symptoms along with a slightly sick stomach (diarrea.. ). But it does sort of "hang on".. I'm in Southern California and most of the people who work where I do are Mexican. And they go back and forth across the border frequently. So the flu has gone around at work. I got it last week and started feeling sick on Wednesday. I took Thursday and Friday off because I was good and sick -- with a fever. On Saturday I felt like I was totally over it. But on Sunday I started getting a runny nose again. I'm just taking a lot of vitamin C and taking it easy. My brother has it to. The truth of the matter is that this is a VERY mild flu. But it's a different situation if you're living in the sort of squaler that people do down on the border towns of Mexico. I wonder how long this nonsense is going to continue. My recommendation is to not even worry about getting it. It's no big deal.

southern california guy
Just a word of caution to you guys. I still have a slightly runny nose and I told a women at work that "..it's probably the dreaded Swine Flu." I was half joking but she told the manager of the land fill and he called my boss and banned me from the landfill for the rest of the day! I make about two hundred dollars a day -- so I just lost two hundred dollars.... Me and my big mouth.. I think that the reason that there aren't more verified cases of the flu in the US is because it is just a mild cold, and most people don't bother going to the doctor for it. Of course the government agency -- that blew the thing up -- stands to profit in a number of ways. It gives them a sort of "job security" because now they can argue that they are VERY needed, they can push for more money, and they can put time and money into developing a cure for this "flu". So don't be an idiot like me. The main "flu" lasts for about two days. If you think that you have it then take a couple of days off from work. There is a sore throat for the first couple of days (You can help the sore throat by slowly sipping a shot of expensive Cognac. I don't know why this works, but it does) DON'T go to the doctor and get checked for "Swine Flu" virus. It's a cold and it can last a while -- keeping you from working. There is no more reason to take time off from work than any other cold. And definitely don't be an idiot like me and jokingly tell people that you think that you have the "Swine Flu". With all of the media hype and nonsense surrounding something like this you will put people into a ridiculous panic.

It is a moderate fever, chills, neck and back pain, headache, endless coughing, exhaustion, possible diarrhea and vomiting, and a feeling you were hit by a medium-sized car. Those are NOT the symptoms of a cold, and it sure lasts more than two days.

Adrestia
Let's give the authorities a little slack here... SARS killed 10% of infected individuals. There was no way to predict the virulence of swine flu. We got lucky.
