The Beauty Of Life

This past week I did my OB rotation for paramedic school where I got to see two live births. Both little girls, both healthy. I can't get over how amazing it was.

At the same time I was struck by the horrific realization that our current president and many others like him support... killing these little ones. Monsters...

Thoughts?

Couldn't agree more. It's beautiful to watch them be born, but abortion is a scourge that must be done away with.

I'm glad you had that reaction. I have a friend who had a baby last year. When she was delivering there was on OBGYN intern (a male) observing her labor and delivery. When it was over she asked him what he thought/felt about pursuing OBGYN. His response was "Not anymore. That was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen." :ohno: I know it can be pretty startling for someone who's never seen a birth before (I had a nurse intern observe my last delivery and her eyes were just bugging out of her head, she looked a little scared, poor gal), but it's sad to hear such negative reactions.

You have to wonder though, common sense I would think would tell you "hey this isn't going to be all that pretty". I mean what did the OBGYN intern think, that the baby just magically comes out all clean and pretty? Had I been your friend and he responded that way to me I would have lost it and probably punch him and just blamed it on the hormones lol

lol That was pretty much both of our reactions, "Well what the heck did you think it would look like?" Although, honestly, I never really quite got why men would want to be OBGYNs in the first place.

There is actually a support group here for men who have PTSD from watching the birth of their kids. They have trouble looking at their wives as being anything but in terrible pain and bleeding. It can actually break up marriages. Plus, there is no way to tell how someone is going to react until it's kind of too late. We had arranged for a Doula because there was no way that I was going to let my husband watch. With his illness, he might have thought the baby was killing me or an alien or something. I wasn't going to take that chance.

I even had a medical power of attorney drawn up to put any Mother vs. Baby decision in someone else's hands. He knew that my wishes would be baby over me, but I'm not sure when it came down to it that he'd be able to follow my wishes, and I didn't want him to carry that burden for the rest of his life. I never carried past 3 1/2 months, so it turned out to be moot. I don't think many couples put enough thought into the process. You can call it the most beautiful thing in the world (and I agree), but that doesn't change the fact that it is about as invasive as you can get. I found sitting through autopsies easier in a way.

I think part of the beauty is the pain, or more specifically, the sacrifice.

I mean, you KNOW, going into it, it is going to hurt like heck. Whether it be the labor, or heading up to labor (the 9 months previous) can be very difficult and painful..

Yet, as all these Mom's have said... It is all worth it.

What a wonderful testimony about self sacrifice and suffering, and how God uses it to bring about a greater good.

Moms pretty much rock...and they make good cookies too....jus sayin.

That said, I did ok with the birthing process (as i type that it sounds really stupid for a guy to say that)..but.. i did almost faint when they removed Shea's cerclage. I was sitting down and almost keeled over. The Ob kinda looked at me (we go to Mass with him), and asked if I was ok... i said i would be when he was done, and to please see to that end as efficiently and safely as possible. Then, he laughed at me. and then finished.

oh. my. word. It still gives me the shivers.

I was struck by how smelly it was.

3+ years and never caught a baby on the ambulance. Excellent.

I KNOW!!!

When I did my first rotation, the woman delivered with third degree tears. A nurse from Mother/Baby floated up to the L/D floor and was standing next to me. We actually saw the rip and everything. I felt so bad for the woman but you all know what it looks like it. It isn't pretty. The nurse standing next to me was, "Is this how it really is? Oh my gosh. I never want to do this again (floating)." As she walked out the room I wondered if she ever went through OB rotation and if she was really a woman. I mean I guess she could have never had kids but to say "Is this how it really is?" was kinda weird for a nurse to say.

But anyways, throughout the rotation I was able to see 2 vaginal delivers and one c-section. It was really cool to see.

I also met a dad who delivered his own son on the bathroom floor because the wife couldn't make it to the hopsital. I asked him, "How did you know what to do?" His reply was awesome. "I don't know. Movies I guess."

3 births? Wow! How long was your rotation? I know some of my friends who were in nursing didn't get to see a single one! When my mom was in nursing school, though, they lived in a building attached to the hospital, so they were assigned patients, and then were "on-call" for those labors, so all the students got to see at least two (one mother who was a first time mom, and one who had babies before).

I've asked myself that a few times too. My regular ob is a female and a wonderful doctor. She was unable to be there for Aaron's delivery because her daughter was having surgery that day. She called in a "special favor" to one of her practice partners. They aren't call partners but he took over my case for her. I'm entirely grateful to him. It made me so happy when after the delivery he told me how glad he was that I didn't have to do a c-section, which was his big fear, and that he had been looking over my charts all night. If I were to ever have a male obgyn he would be the one.

I never asked my grandfather. I'll have to ask my uncle sometime. I think it was mainly the beauty of that new life for him.

Anyway, to the OP, it's great that you got to do that. I had 3 student midwives in with me, so they got to see the episiotomy & ventouse delivery. I think they left before the stitches (can't remember). Maybe they thought it wouldn't be a pretty sight, since it was without anaesthesia (I'm allergic).

It depends on the day lol. When I was having Aaron the women on either side of me were in labor also. One gave birth about 10 mins before I had Aaron and then the next one had hers about 20 mins after.

The hospital where I delivered plays Brahms lullaby throughout the entire hospital every time a lil one is born. So it was pretty funny hearing it go off time after time.
