Aloysius
Okay, so, spoiler alert, don't read below if you don't want to have the ending spoiled... I sat in my seat at the end, absolutely satisfied with the brilliance of the whole movie, but all I could say was "I can't believe they didn't fix the time line!!!" does anyone realize the implications? now, I know they had Uhura (haha and I loved the theme throughout the movie with asking for her first name) use the term "alternate reality" when they were figuring out the whole temporal issue there... and I think they did that intentionally to imply that both realities are parallel to each other or something... because if the timeline really were that way in Star Trek canon, it would mean every series and movie never happened, and might not happen at all the way they did. think about it: Vulcan is destroyed in this time line, and Vulcans are endangered. That completely changes the dynamics of every single series.... Spock, if their adventures mirrored anything, wouldn't be able to go back to his home planet after rising from the dead... or for that matter the whole pon far episode in TOS, Tuvok on Voyager probably never existed, et cetera. it's just insane to have a Star Trek universe without the planet Vulcan. anyway, other things... Uhura clearly always had a thing for spock in TOS on TV, and actually, all of her flirting to his indifferent unemotional response makes perfect sense with them having been "together" at one point. and the back story on Kirk and Uhura is perfect to, totally meshes with how TOS went. of course, the time lines are different and such, but still... there were many ways in which their lives turned out the same so it should fit. Anyway, with the timeline messed with thoroughly, the big question is: what's next? Does Star Trek get reborn in new movies with these actors??? I am very excited about that possibility, they did a superb job creating the right character dynamics between them. that was the one thing, when I started to realize they wouldn't fix the timeline (after Nero was defeated, since I very much expected the whole ramming the red-matter ship into Nero's ship to cause some kind of ripple effect that made it all have never happened or something), that made me in favor of the timeline not being fixed. I think maybe they should fix the timeline at some point, or perhaps do some more thorough nod to the alternate reality idea. but yeah, will there be more movies?? Apotheoun
I have seen the original series episodes an uncounted number of times, and I do not recall Uhura "flirting" with Spock. Nurse Chapel had a thing for Spock, but I simply do not remember Uhura having a thing for him.
CatherineM
I heard Nichelle Nichols speak at a convention years ago, and she said that she was dating Gene Roddenberry at the same time that Majel was. She talked about the three of them riding around on a motorcycle together. She said that there were no hard feelings when he picked Majel because she knew during that time that it would have ruined his career to marry her. If I remember correctly, her on screen kiss with Kirk was the first one on network TV.

But if you mean that is was the first interracial kiss on network television, then I believe that you are correct.
jeffpugh
I loved the movie too. Those actors hit the originals dead on, but added a bit of their youthful dynamic to the characters (fitting, since this movie was an attempt to the origins). The time line thing got me too. I don't think it can be quite fixed though, unless old Spock mentions some discovery in going back in time. Anywho, speaking of the Vulcans, I enjoyed the peek into their world, such as the schooling for the Vulcan children, some formalities, etc. I heard on TV that this movie was to appeal to both "Trekkies" and non-Trekkies alike, but for the latter group foremost. I liked the little "easter eggs" they left for the fan-types though. Like the Beagle reference, or Bones going "I'm a doctor, not a physicist!", among other things. Tell your friends to go! Pretty eye candy, lots of detail in the movie, an interesting Take on something old(ish).

She's just singing and emoting in general. Nurse Chapel had the thing for Spock. If anything Uhura is kinda making fun of Spock. After she does her "little song" about Spock, she does one about Charlie. Is she flirting with Charlie? No, she is teasing him, and he -- unlike Spock -- does not take the teasing well. Apotheoun
After watching the new movie a second time I really don't see any need for a sequel. Moreover, Star Trek didn't really need to be rebooted in my opinion, and unlike the reboot of Battlestar Galactica, which in its original version was on for only one year and had only 22 episodes, Star Trek has over 700 episodes and 30 years of history that has now been completely dumped just so that Paramount can make a couple hundred million dollars in the US box office. She wasn't in Star Trek, but she's just that awesome that she should be mentioned, anyway.

CatherineM
I think of all the speeches I saw at conventions, Nichele Nichols and Marina Sirtis gave the best ones. They were both very spicy.
