Hilde
I seriously thought you would talk about an apparition you thought you had or something. Maybe a lay person in an order? Eastern European? Muslim woman sniffing around?
misereremi
Talk about 6 degrees of separation! You know who I’m talking about! So, is she a Latin Rite Catholic, or does she belong to the Eastern Church? Is she Coptic Catholic by any chance? Are the clothes some type of cultural garb? Salutes to a fellow Brit!
I just realised that there are two people who fit your description. However one of them tends to wear brighter jilbab-she's a lovely Eritrean lady, and I know that she attends a Day with Mary. I think she is Gheez rite but usually attends Tridentine mass. And yes those are her cultural garms- and aren't they gorgeous. I have a few Gheez rite friends but they've adopted the Western dress. There's another lady I know who wears darker jilbab, usually black..with a large crucifix. People always ask her if she's Muslim. That is literally just what she chooses to wear, she's a Latin Rite Catholic Londoner.

All northerners" sound almost identical to me also. (Is Oklahoma classed as midwest or the south? Sorry if that's a silly question) Now, I can distinguish between a resident of OC and residents of all of the forsesaid. Georgia, as well as South & North Carolina, has a very specific sound to their dialect.
the lords sheep
Just out of curiosity, I’ve often heard that Yankies are not popular in foreign countries due to US foreign policy, and this shows in how they're treated abroad. Can you relate to this? (I apologise in advance on behalf of the Brits if this is your experience)
As another ex-pat sticking her nose in, I've frequently had "issues" (nothing too bad) being an American in Italy. For the most part, I don't have too many difficulties- but that's because I speak the language.... I've been cursed at on the street (actually, more than once) by someone who heard me speaking English that it was US's (aka Bush's) fault that Italy is having such a bad economy. I've also been the object of many MANY stares and even some comments (Italians naturally stare- they're very curious- but I can also understand what they're saying, and anytime it's anti-American, I step in and explain to them that I understand what they are saying and it's rude to stare and speak about someone in that way). In other regards, though, I can see where and why Americans get a bad stereotype here...I live with American college students who are here to [s]party[/s] study abroad and frequently see/hear other"obnoxious Americans" here in restaurants and other public venues. Glad to hear it's not such a problem elsewhere, though!

I guessed that she had to be a Catholic from the east part of Africa. The woman I saw was wearing a black full length Niqab like garb. I knew she had to be some sort of eastern rite Catholic and my first thought was that her clothes were cultural and not so much religious! I did a google search for Geez rite, and found this Church: http://kidane-mehret.org/desk1.html It looks like the the Geez rite is of Ethiopian origin and is of the Alexandrian rite: http://www.mncuf.org/rites.htm
There's another lady I know who wears darker jilbab, usually black..with a large crucifix. Is she stand offish when strangers query her religion or Catholic rite? Just so you know, I think the Church I saw her in was in Kingsley or somewhere else in North London. It was the Day With Mary a few weeks before the one held in Westminster Abbey. PS- If she happens to stumble upon this thread somehow, I hope she doesn’t think I’m stalking her. Her appearance, not only attire but facial features, are just very striking, in particular when contrasted amongst a group of people who were wearing dull winter/autumn coats. Ash Wednesday
It sure would be cool if people talked about me on the internets like that. "Who was that scrappy looking blonde girl at church with the jacket with the little skating hockey penguin on the back? She was stunning!" Oh, maybe not.
