Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy said: "I was born Catholic, I was baptised, but in my life I feel profoundly secular.

"I find that the controversy coming from the Pope's message – albeit distorted by the media – is very damaging.

"In Africa it's often Church people who look after sick people. It's astonishing to see the difference between the theory and the reality.

"I think the Church should evolve on this issue. It presents the condom as a contraceptive which, incidentally, it forbids, although it is the only existing protection," she told Femme Actuelle, the women's magazine.
Wrong and giggle-inducing on so many levels.

Social/religious/foreign affairs advice from a model! What would we do without her?

Maybe Janice Dickinson has something she would like to add...

Things are generally more fun when you are not nice.

I'll answer that for you:

1. This woman likes to sleep with married men. Her affair with Mick Jagger contributed to his marital breakdown with Jerry Hall.

2. This woman likes to sleep with rich and powerful men, no matter how many times such men have been married (She is the third wife of the current French president- so we'll see how long that lasts)

Honestly, what's the point of posting these things? It's nothing but idle gossip!

The question was asked "Who is Carla Bruni" and so I put forth an answer. And a good one at that. ;)

Obviously it was not up to your standards.

PS- I have noted your dislike of all things "gossipy" in nature.

Possibly to your standards it was an appropriate answer, but Phatmass is not a place for dragging people through the mud, no matter what their behavior might be. A simple answer of "she's the First Lady of France" would have sufficed. And last I checked we were all sinful people. So ask yourself this, would you like your sins publicly aired and spread all over the place so that people who think they are better or superior can belittle you and talk about what a horrible sinful person you are. Grow up. Gossiping isn't becoming for any Christian.

And, frankly I don't care if you did take notice that I don't like gossip. The last time I checked the Church didn't approve of it either.

I think gossip is frowned up not simply because St. Colette dislikes it (although that should be reason enough, seeing as she's fantabulous), but because it's not constructive and detracts from the character of the person gossipped about.

No matter what you might think of her relationship history, it should be possible to pull apart what she says without smearing her. Her actions and past life might - might - do that on their own. Or they might not. In any event, some things are better left unsaid, even if they're true.

So...would anyone care to comment on what has actually been quoted in the article?

i think it is very clear that the Catholic Church has not done its job in teaching the Faithful about the evils of contraception.

if France, "the eldest daughter of the Church" had a high percentage of "Catholics" wanting the Pontiff to step down after his words against contraception, I believe we are in great need of intense Catechetical renewal...

...and we need to quit mincing words to "make nice" with those who will disagree with the teachings of the Church. We need to spread the Truth without watering it down...

Carla Bruni's adultery is well known to all here in the UK, so none of it this is news. She is also a public figure that likes to "ham it up" for the media like most "celebrities", and quite frankly, anyone who does this warrants any criticism that comes their way. If you put your business out there for the sake of selling magazines, then it will hit you later on in life.

Informing all on the type of person who thinks she qualifies as moral arbiter for the Church is appropriate, in my opinion.

You can list it as one of my flaws then.

Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy is mistaken on what the Pope can and cannot do, firstly. The Pope cannot "evolve" the Church's teaching on contraception because it is based on natural law, so beyond his means. So that's one thing that needs to be clarified for her. Another is that use of condoms does not protect against STDs or AIDs, it says so directly on the label warning. So it's definitely not the "only protection". We must also worry about those who are infected and do not know it can could possibly spread it through blood donations. So education on this is greatly needed as well.

Her comments are not unlike many of other politicians and world leaders. It comes from ignorance on what and how the Church teaches and what She is capable of changing and what She is not capable of changing.

I find it interesting that the article pointed out that no other First Lady of France would ever have been critical of the Pope. Many French people do not practice their faith properly but when studying French for 6 years I came to understand that they have a notion of pride towards being "Catholic". They might not practice their faith but it's dangerous to speak out against it there. It's more of a culture thing for them than anything. An insult to their culture is a no no.
