I don't know if I was taught that, either. not at my first reconciliation, anyway.
On behalf of faithful catechists, I'm sorry that we failed you. inunionwithrome
I personally receive on the tongue myself. It was only when I was studying to be a sister that that happened because the Paten was still be used in PA. I also consider myself to be unworthy to receive in the hands. Mercy me
I guess St. Catherine of Sienna was a pretty horrible Catholic, then.
I am not St. Catherine of Sienna. And I am sure that God is not calling me to petition the Pope.
MissyP89
We were never taught to receive on the tongue or confess behind the screen. They taught me how to receive on the tongue for physical reasons, but otherwise I would have never known... In my parish confessionals, the screen is there, and when you walk by it, there are armchairs for face-to-face confession.
BG45
I was never taught how when I was converting, either. I do receive on the tongue now, though. I just watched a couple of people and then went for it. Actually, my son gave me the impetus needed to do it, since I was holding him and didn't have my hands free.
I can definitely see why that would be a bit of an encouragement. I don't think I've ever seen a person receive on the tongue in person yet. Most parents with kids just set them on the floor, recieve, and then pick back up again that I've been behind.
I taught my PSR kids that you could, but I believe they were so nervous about receiving for the first time anyway that they were scared to death to try.
I can see their point, I'd be scared that He would drop to the floor. Also the poor EMs often have no clue when a person tries.

I try to stand pretty close to the priest so he doesn't have far to go, and tilt my chin up just a little. (No sticking out necessary; I saw somebody do that on EWTN once and it freaked me out!) If you do it right, he shouldn't have to touch your mouth with his fingers at all. And you are so right about EMs...a lot of them touch my mouth/face or look at me funny when I open my mouth. That's why I get in the priest's line.

For good reasons the Church has moved to a more strict canonization process. At one time though! I wonder how many saints we wouldn't have if it weren't for the laity! inunionwithrome
In our parish since I serve as an EM, we were properly trained for when people receive on the tongue. There are a lot of retired people who grew up before Vatican II and that's the way things were done. But, it's cool.
