Thy Geekdom Come
Latin I: Beginning Latin Pr. Raphael Objective: To learn and study Latin for whatever purposes interest you. Classes: We will decide the pace as we go along. I will start with two large (that is, info-crammed) classes per week. The order I hope to teach it in is as follows (there may be more than one of the following in any given lesson, as allows the space and time I have to work with): Introduction Pronunciation Beginning Vocabulary Concept of the Declension First Declension Vocabulary Concept of the Conjugation Concept of the Tense Present Tense Vocabulary Review Second Declension Vocabulary Future Tense Vocabulary Review Third Declension (this may take a while) Vocabulary Perfect Tense Vocabulary Review Cumulative Review-Test Concept of the Adjective First and Second Declension Adjectives Vocabulary Third Declesion Adjectives Vocabulary Imperfect Tense Review Concept of Pronoun Qui, Hic, Ille Charts Concept of the Adverb Adverbs Pluperfect Tense Review Future Perfect Tense Vocabulary Concept of the Degree Comparatives and Superlatives Vocab Review Cumulutive Review-Test Concept of the Passive Voice Study of Present Passive Study of Imperfect Passive Study of Future Passive Study of Perfect Passive Study of Pluperfect Passive Study of Future Passive Review Introduction to II-III-IV Chart (a little-known secret) Fourth Declension Vocabulary Fifth Declension Vocabulary Review Participles Vocabulary Gerunds Review Cumulative Review-Test Concept of Subjunctive Mood Study of Present Active Subjunctive Study of Present Passive Subjunctive Study of Imperfect Active Subjunctive Study of Imperfect Passive Subjunctive Study of Perfect Active Subjunctive Study of Perfect Passive Subjunctive Study of Pluperfect Active Subjunctive Study of Pluperfect Passive Subjunctive Review Introduction to Subjunctive II-III-IV Chart Cumulative Review-Final Somewhere in there we can sqeeze in the odds and ends like numbers, dates, imperative, etc. This schedule can change completely upon request and upon how well (or badly) it is received. One more note: It's not nearly as bad as it seems. This is essentially a crash course in basic vocab and into upper-intermediate grammer. For those who might wish to go on, I can also offer courses in Latin as it deals with mythology, Christianity, Law, Culture, etc. To keep the Phatmass Phorums from being slowed much by our information, I would request that answers to homework (which I only correct for your benefit, since there are no consequences to flunking out, besides the very stigma of flunking out in itself) be sent to my email address. Also, I might consider giving whatever publication rights over to Phatmass. It may make a decent publication as a text.

Pio Nono
JMJ 3/27 - Fourth Saturday of Lent Pius Nonus carissimo Raphaeli salutem. salve, frater! scribemusne in Latina? gratias ago tibi! in schola sum, et studeo philosophiae Latinaeque (sed non studeo Latinae in hoc anno). si papatem optes, possum esse. vale. (here's my shoddy translation) Pio Nono greets his most beloved Raphael (it's a Pliny-esque greeting). Greetings, brother! Shall we be writing in Latin? I give you thanks! I am in college [school], and I am studying philosophy and Latin [studere takes a dative, correct?] (though I am not studying Latin this year [meaning semester]). If you should need a tutor, I am able to be one. Vale! - I'm attempting to minor in Latin, so pray for me. Yours, Pio Nono
Pio Nono
JMJ 3/27 - Fourth Saturday of Lent P.S.: Dicemus Latinam ecclesiasticam classicamve? Dicamus classicam!!! Latina Ciceronis et Caesaris super Latina Christiana est (IMHO). P.S.: Will we be speaking Church Latin or classical Latin? Let us speak classical!!! The Latin of Caesar and Cicero is superior [above] Christian Latin (in my humble opinion). The harsh ring of the classical "ae" and the slick sound of the classical "v" sounds nicer than the Italian-ridden "ae" and "v" of Church Latin. Again, these are personal biases. -PN

Thy Geekdom Come
Pio Nono greets his most beloved Raphael (it's a Pliny-esque greeting).
Hmmm...I thought it sounded more like Catullus...except that it wasn't in hendecasyllabic meter. Oh, and studere does take the dative.
P.S.: Will we be speaking Church Latin or classical Latin? Let us speak classical!!! The Latin of Caesar and Cicero is superior [above] Christian Latin (in my humble opinion).
I learned Classical, but I will teach both sets of pronunciations, and people can pick whichever one they want.
Are you going to get this pinned on a board somewhere?
I don't know how...
You could start a yahoo group, or I could create a website for you?
I'm only semi-computer literate...and I don't have the money to run a website... Are Yahoo groups free?
