I think this teaching which was clarified through Vatican II and the writings of holy and knowledgeable men like Cardinal Newman, St. Josemaria Escriva, Jacques Maritain, Pope John Paul II, Germain Grisez, Russel Shaw, &c is very important for every Catholic, especially a member of the laity, to know and digest, because:

1. It leads to clear and fulfilling ways to live as a Christian in the midst of the world.
2. It provides a strong sense of purpose for the lay Christian.
3. It helps people avoid the trap of compartmentalising their spiritual life and their professional live into separate areas. This helps develop integrity, and if I understand right, holiness lies in overcoming multiplicity, doesn't it?

From the writings of St. Josemaria, he states that a pre-requisite for living this out is a firm and deep realisation of our Divine Filiation.

Anyway, this has been a spiritual teaching which I have been very attracted to, and that's why I recommend it.

Another thing that will help people who find themselves in great anxiety at what appears to be an un-attainably high standard of perfection set before them in the Christian life, is the teaching of the Sacrament of the Present Moment, presented through the collected spiritual direction of Jean Pierre de Caussade, S.J. Every Catholic needs to know why they are Catholic. Not my parents made me, or I've outgrown my parents "religion" or I am spiritual but not religious, or any other way they justify living a cursory faith or one that is there when they need it the most, and on the back burner any other time.

Sorry, but lately I have been encountering so many people that have no idea why they are Catholic, no idea why they want to be married in the Church, or why they feel it is OK for them to disagree with major teachings of the faith. My favorite is a wedding couple I am preparing and the male fiance, raised and trained in Catholic schools all his life does not know if he believes in God but "respects my beliefs."

Short and simple, they need to know why they are Catholic, why it means anything, and that, just as with anything, being Catholic implies certain responsibilities they are to be accountable for.
