Baking Soda

Have you taken your cat to the Vet? If not, I would suggest doing so if you can. This could be caused by a number issues other than old age.

nature's miracle works wonders on pet pee. Make sure you get the cat pee formula.

keep the cat confined to one or two rooms.

After the pee is cleaned use the arm&hammer pet carpet stuff and a good vaccumn

I wonder why more people don't choose to go without carpet.

The carpet makers want us to think it is necessary.

The carpet cleaners get a kick out of it too.

Not saying it's bad over concrete, but some people have pretty wood under their blotchy, frazzled mess.

Sound.

Carpet absorbs sound. Have you ever been in a house with a bunch of kids that had only wood flooring and/or tiles? I have. Not good.

Personally, I would prefer a wood floor with huge room sized area rug. That way, you get the beauty of wood, with the softness and sound benefits of having carpet. Added bonus is that you can replace the area rug more easily than ripping out and replacing old carpet.

I ditto the baking soda, buy you can also add corn meal to the baking soda. Let it sit for a coupe of hours, then vacuum up. If that doesn't work, go with the enzyme stuff they sell at the pet store.

That and warmth... Winter mornings with bare feet on cold floors.... yikers....

And most modern homes don't have great wood underneath. Many older homes, yes, but not most newer ones.

I agree about the warmth thing! I hate wearing socks or shoes so carpet is a must.

And you're right about newer homes, most don't have wood underneath the carpet. My dad is currently planning to rip up the carpet in his house (which was my grandparent's home that they built) and refinish the wooden floors. I believe my dad said the floor are oak but cherry stained.

I don't know how well this would work on carpet but vinegar works to eliminate pet pee smell from other surfaces. I have read that you can use a mixture of mouthwash and water too.

Carpet is not my favorite b/c of the allergen factor. Carpets harbor all sorts of allergens and are almost impossible to thoroughly clean. But the sound and warmth factor is a benefit of carpet. I think I agree with dUSt that wood floors with large area rugs are best.

Thy Geekdom Come

If you step on a skunk in your living room, I think that would pretty effectively keep you from smelling any cat pee.
