Phatmass Studio Pc Crashed... All Data Likely Lost...

So Flip came over today while I was at work and informed me the phatmass studio PC wouldn't boot.

I've been trying to fix it for the last few hours. It seems like it's a corrupt partition or something. Safe mode, Recovery Console, WIn XP boot CD... all failed. I'm actually on the computer right now from a bootable Linux CD--just to try and recover some data before doing a complete reformat--but when I try to browse the hard drive, Linux gives a "unable to mount device" error.

I'm freaking out.

The entire Massmatics II album is on this thing. A lot of songs from Massmatics III even... The rosary album I've been working on... basically, three years of studio recordings... all possibly lost.

Who knows about recovering data?

Well if it was a Mac I'd suggest Diskwarrior, it saved me once from a similar problem, when NOTHING else would save the data.

But if you had a Mac you could try to use it on that HD.

I thought Macs don't have problems. That's what the hip young guy on the commercial says. And there isn't any legal copping

You didn't back-up any of it?

I don't know what to tell you. I'll ask my bro he once had a very similar problem but was somehow able to recover most of his data.

You know, Method Man's first cd was re-recorded in very little time because of the Rza's studio flooding. That album is now a classic.

Good Omen. You should do this for every album.

Ha! All Hard Drives will fail, spinning HD's are in fact obsolete, solid state is superior but mad expensive. Many of the failures of spinning HD's is that they no longer spin.

Which maybe the problem here, the mechanics of the HD are shot, or the logic board on the HD is burnt out. If that is the case (and sorry to say sounds like it) no amount of software will fix it.

You can have the data rescued by taking it to a professional who will from what I understand take out the disk in the HD and put them in another. But that is very difficult so it will be a professional price.

Oh yes, I once temporally fixed a HD which logic board was burnt out, by replacing it with a logic board for a HD which had the same exact brand, model, size, firmware and drivers. It worked for about 15 mins before it crashed again, but it allowed me to saved at least some of my data on it.

Another last resort is if it is getting to hot and crashing, is to place it in the freezer for a hour or more then quickly as possible putting it back in and saving the data. Problem there is that it could permanently damage the data on the disks, (preventing a pro to fix it) because of the water buildup.

better than any real-life tech I've ever gone to. If there's a way to fix it, they can probably help.

just recovered a friend's laptop. it posted, went to boot option menu, but then hung at logo progress screen, regardless of option. partition c lost. first i used "NTFS Undelete" to recover individual files/directories for him before going into anything else that might overwrite sectors.

xp boot cd, puppy linux, ultimate boot cd, etc. even with all the included tools, none worked to restore partition. used all the freeware mbr and partition tools i could find, didn't work either. finally i booted to recovery console and fixmbr did it. entire drive and winxp restored. go figure.

If the do-it-yourself method is too scary/advanced for you, then Best Buy will do it - or they will at least try. Unless your hard drive had a head crash, you should be okay. If it had a head crash you are totally screwed. Does the drive make a thumping / clicking noise that it didn't before?

You could get USB Hard drive Enclosure for around $15 at a CompUSA, take the hard drive out of the crashed system, put it into the enclosure then recover the data.

As long as it's spins, you're good.

Now, if it's not spinning, then data recovery turns into a $900-2000 project by a lab.

Call me or IM if you any other questions.

I don't think all Best Buys do data recovery. I tried to get data recovered from an external hard drive once, on which I'd stored my entire iTunes library, and they couldn't do it for some reason. I found I had another backup though so I was OK.
