alimarie_11
i've been to catecism from preschool to sophmore year of high school but i know nothing ,(kind of) about the bible, the stories or ..what it says basically how come the actually words from the bible hasn't been taught my friends who are all differnt religion can recite so many different things , and they have been able to since 5th grade, when i was young it was hard to stand up for my religion because i had no idea of where certain idea's were backed up of even where they came from. when others could say, i believe this because here it says this soo? why aren't children taught things of the bible? CatherineM
I grew up where there were very few Catholics. All my friends went off to vacation bible school each year, and came home quoting scripture. It upset me in the same way that this seems to have upset you. When my dad saw me upset, he asked me what verses they had quoted. He picked up his bible, and read the entire passage rather than just the single verse. He asked if I had heard it before, and I said yes, in church. He asked if I understood what the passage was trying to tell us, and I knew that as well from the homily. He told me it was much more important to know what the bible was trying to tell us rather than memorizing random verses out of their context. If you don't feel that you have been properly exposed to Sacred Scripture, I apologize on behalf of your teachers and catechists. Luckily it isn't too late. You can pick up a study bible, you can enroll in a theology program, or join a bible study, or even all of the above. We have a duty to teach children. It is a parent's most important duty, but it isn't just their job. It's up to all of us.
