My Computer Tells Me...

Nihil Obstat

My computer has periodically told me that I'm low on virtual memory.

This makes sense since it runs about as fast as an 80 year old SSPXer on the way to a LifeTeen Mass.
A large part of it is that this computer is significantly older than most. I'm stalling to replace it so that I can hit the back to school sales. It should be worth it.

Anyway, I already spent two hours defragmenting the hard drive. Got rid of millions of.... whatever the units of memory are called. It took a really long time. I thought it would help.

Same problem though.

What next? Any suggestions?

Needs more RAM. Also look for background processes you don't need, and maybe run msconfig and stop programs you don't need to start up when you log on.

You can increase the allotment of virtual memory, though I'm not sure if that's generally advisable.

Yeah, you should at least wait for Windows 7. That, or break the hold of the Great Beast of Redmond and use a Mac or Linux or something.

Curse at it in Russian.

I bought my husband's new computer on tigerdirect.ca just so he could keep XP. Try running CCleaner. It's a free download on cnet, and cleans the carp off. You could also uninstall some programs you don't use anymore.

I think that the best suggestion is just get a new computer. :P :)
(I'm not enough of a computer person to even mind Vista though....... haha.)

Even though I am not very techn-y you need to be able to do basic repair.

A scream to your big brother won't always work sadly :sadwalk:
"EAGLE EYE I NEED YOU-THE COMPUTER IS POSSESSED AGAIN! I LL BAKE COOKIES"!

So this summer I get to take computer "classes" with EE teaching. Joy!

I don't have a big brother. :sadwalk:

Although, like people, computers naturally respect, fear, and love me. So I never have a problem

Actually the funny thing is that hitting the computer actually does help me. There's something loose inside, so hitting it can help the connection.
