StColette
The bells at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Phoenix, Arizona, normally chime at the top of every hour from 8 am to 8 pm. But neighbours complained that the bells, which were registered at around 67 decibels, or about as loud as a normal conversation, were too loud, and rang too frequently. Bishop Richard Painter was given a 10-day suspended sentence and the judge ordered the church to restrict its chimes to no more than 60 decibels on Sundays for two minutes and on specific religious holidays. more Here Another article Phoenix bishop sentenced in bell-ringing case Associated Press - June 4, 2009 10:24 AM ET PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix church leader has received a suspended 10-day jail sentence for violating a city noise ordinance because of his church's bells. mcts
my bet is that the church was there before any of these people moved in.

Lounge Daddy
People in AZ are so cranky and grumpy and quick to pick a fight about anything. Look at John McCain, for example. Must be the heat.
StColette
I believe he's an Anglican Bishop, but still ... come on folks there are more important things to worry about then some bells.
Didymus
Bishop Olmstead is the Catholic bishop of Phoenix..
VoTeckam
No I do not think he is anglican. Nothing on the website refers to the church belonging to a denomination. Other wesbite only refer to this church as "charismatic." So I am guessing this man is a bishop in the same way that TD Jakes is a Bishop.. meaning his church has "planted" other churches. StColette
I don't think it matters if he's Catholic, Anglican, or Baptist. The fact that he's being put in jail over bells is stupid. This is what their "Diocesan" website says: The Diocese of the South Central is a group of ministers and congregations in the Communion of Christ the Redeemer, a fellowship of Christians who embrace “The Three Streams” of the Christian Faith: Bible Believing, Spirit Filled and Sacramental. Please make yourself at home while visiting our website, and feel free to give us a call or send us an email for further information. The Communion of Christ the Redeemer is currently in dialogue about union with: The Reformed Episcopal Church The Anglican Province of America
VoTeckam
He doesnt actually have to serve time in jail...which is good. But for him to have a criminal record at all is ridiculous.
Thy Geekdom Come
Okay, we've established that he's not Catholic. Yeah...the bells are as loud as ordinary talking and he's been sentenced? Ridiculous.

The closest Anglican parish to us also rings the bells on Sundays, and I love it, since I can hear it in my house.

puellapaschalis
Here a parish priest was hauled (not literally) to court for ringing bells in the morning to call people to Mass - 7:30am I think it was. Never mind the fact that the church was there before any of the houses were (although the bells hadn't been rung for years) and that there's an elevated highway really (as in really) close by. Because they have no guts, the diocese told him to stop ringing the bells. He still kept on ringing them. I'm not sure what's happening now - although knowing him he's still ringing them every day before Mass.

My guess is that the neighbors have some other qualms with the church and they are using this as way to get back at them. That is jsut speculation of course but it would explain why they are making a mountain of a mole hill.
