The Grand Canyon

I'm going to be visiting the Grand Canyon in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone has visited before.

Specifically, I was wondering about the differences of visiting the North Rim vs the South Rim. They say 90% of visitors go to the South Rim--but is this because it is better or because it is more convenient?

We'll actually be coming from the north, so if the north rim is a great experience, with less crowds, I'm all for that--but then again, if there's stuff to do and see at the south rim that I shouldn't miss, then we'll make the extra drive there.

Advice?

I would say cover you bases and visit both. The south rim is a good choice if you have kids. There are more lookouts and visitor buidlings. The North Rim is AMAZING if you are the wilderness type. You will be mostly alone and the natural beauty is breathtaking.

I went there this past summer. The south rim is more developed in the way of trails, lookouts, etc. I don't know anything about the north rim. how long are you planning to visit the grand canyon?

In that case, I'd look into hiking into the grand canyon from the rim.

The North Rim is awesome! You have the place to yourself, the stars are beautiful, and there are Condors. If you're coming from the north anyway, go there. (Zion and Bryce are worth visiting, too, by the way....)

Taking the North Kaibab Trail down into the canyon will give you a different perspective on it than just observing from the top. If you're *really* into hiking, you can then hike all the way down and back out the other side to the South Rim. But that does involve camping in the bottom of the canyon, which can be a very hot place (the rims are cooler).

The South Rim gets more visitors mostly because it's more accessible. It's hard to get to the
North Rim without driving around the Canyon. If you're only there 2 days...I'd pick one and visit, not spend all your time driving around the place.

They should just build a huge bridge over the middle of it to make things easy for everyone. It's the American way.
