Gregorius, the bishops of the SSPX have been ordaining priests illicitly for twenty years. Rome is not going to be able to talk them out of it. Unless Rome wants to end all future possibillity of dialogue with the SSPX, the Vatican is not going to impose an ecclesiastical censure on the bishops.
Perhaps you are right, Resurrexi. But according to the news article, it seems this time the church has explicitly told them not to do it. It's more of a obedience thing than an ordination thing. Besides, this is the first time in twenty years the SSPX has had major talks with the Vatican. Though I'm sure the Church would not let it go quietly if it is defied again.

Hey all, I'm just disturbed by the fact that Bishop Fellay seems to think nothing is wrong.

You obviously haven't been paying attention to the affairs related to the SSPX the last several years, since Bishop Fellay has never given the impression that he thought the society was wrong.

Neither had Archbishop Lefebvre. Or any of the other bishops for that matter. I'm just saying the circumstances are different. For once, they might be able to be reunited. I'd think Bishop Fellay would try a little harder to work with Rome. Maybe I'm just a naive fool. :juggle:

One of my friends attended the ordinations today in Winona. He texted me and said "I just saw thirteen priests get ordained. There were two Bishops, and one hundred other priests attending. The estimate of faithful was about four thousand people. There were dominican and franciscan nuns there too."

I really wonder what the Pope's stance on this will be.

The Pope knew the ordinations would happen. I doubt that he will do anything because he wants to see the SSPX regularized.

Does he have to actually do anything, or does Canon Law already deal with such things? If a Bishop illegitimately ordains a Priest, is he breaking any Canons? Are they any automatic penalties he and the ordained face?

Arch. Lefebvre was suspended from all priestly and episcopal functions for ordaining priests without approval. Well, the priets and bishops of the SSPX are already suspended so I can't see what other disciplinary actions can be taken......

Besides, I'm sure Benedict didn't expect the SSPX to stop operating once the excommunications were lifted. If that's what he wanted he would have inflicted more penalties on the bishops, not lifted them.

Ahhh, that ordination sounds beautiful. 113 priests all dressed in a cassock and scores of nuns dressed like nuns. What a sight!
