Resurrexi
During his visit to the Vatican with a delegation of Austrian Bishops in the past two days, the Cardinal Archbishop of Vienna delivered a message from his flock, as Italian news agency ASCA reports: In the Vatican, Card. Schönborn also presented the so-called "Initiative of the lay faithful" (Laieninitiative), a petition by relevant Austrian Catholics launched earlier this year, which asks for the abolition of compulsory celibacy, the return to activity of married priests, the opening of the diaconate to women, and the ordination of [married] 'viri probati'. sacredheartandbloodofjesus
let us each offer up a decade of the most holy rosary for this cardinal and his change of heart. cappie
COMMUNIQUE ON POPE'S MEETING WITH AUSTRIAN BISHOPS VATICAN CITY, 17 JUN 2009 (VIS) - The Holy See Press Office yesterday published the following communique concerning the meeting of the Pope and a number of heads of dicasteries of the Roman Curia with a group of Austrian bishops. The gathering was held in the Vatican on 15 and 16 June. "The meeting, characterised by lively 'collegial affection', served to examine, in a fraternal exchange of ideas and with a constructive spirit, certain questions concerning the situation of the diocese of Linz and of the Church in Austria, proposing solutions to current problems. "The Holy Father highlighted the urgent importance of strengthening faith and of maintaining integral faithfulness to Vatican Council II and to the Church's post-conciliar Magisterium, as well as the need to renew catechesis in the light of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. "Attention also turned to doctrinal and pastoral questions and to the situation of the clergy, the laity, the major seminaries and the theological faculties in Linz and in other dioceses of Austria. "The Austrian bishops thanked the Holy Father for his paternal solicitude and for this meeting, a sign of his closeness to the Church in Austria, giving assurances of their full communion and their affection. The Austrian bishops also thanked the Roman Curia for its fruitful collaboration and openness". The meeting was attended by the following Austrian prelates: Cardinal Christoph Schonborn O.P., archbishop of Vienna and president of the Austrian Episcopal Conference; Archbishop Alois Kothgasser S.D.B. of Salzburg; Bishop Egon Kapellari of Graz-Seckau and vice president of the Austrian Episcopal Conference, and Bishop Ludwig Schwarz S.D.B. of Linz. truthfinder
He was?!
Yep, he was lower on the list then many others, but there were definitely those out there who thought he had a decent chance. (He was below Papa Ratzinger and Cardinal Arinze) Thank the good Lord we have the pope we do.
EcceNovaFacioOmni
I'd like to know more. There isn't much detail there. This prince of the Church was director of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and usually considered a strong defender of orthodoxy.
Brother Adam
Most news about him recently suggests something is wrong. First the satanic art he commissioned by an atheist communist, then the disturbing pictures of Corpus Christi coming from Linz, and now this. Can this be the same archbishop of God's Human Face and the CCC?

VeniteAdoremus
I would be very careful. "Presented" can have several meanings in a biased news source. Even if he did give the pope the petition, he could have done as a document of evidence of the problems in his country, not because he agreed with it! The wrongs in Austria run very deep. They can't be solved by one Archbishop. This Cardinal is a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, among many other things. Don't ruin his reputation based on rumours. I was just posting a news article!
I did not mean to shoot you I'm sorry. I was being pre-emptive. I have seen threads starting like this one explode before, and I don't think the Cardinal deserves that. Now people (not here, on the big bad Internet) are saying he supports female deacons* while all they have is one article saying he discussed the troubles of his Archdiocese with the Pope and brought documentation**. *which, by the way, have existed in the Church before, to which stole-wearing Carthusian nuns are still testament, but that is completely besides the point - the role they had is obsolete now that culture doesn't frown upon a man entering a woman's sickchamber anymore. It's just one of my favourite historical titbits and this was a lovely excuse. **I freely admit that this is spin. As are almost all articles. Apotheoun
I agree, people are quick to judge the Cardinal of Vienna, and mainly because of the weird disco / balloon liturgy that he presided at a few months ago, but no one knows for sure that he was advised about what was going to happen during that strange liturgy before he arrived at the church. That was totally weird. But my parish priest told me it's really, really hard to get out of situations like that, and even more for a bishop. They are often just shipped in and given a booklet at the last minute.
