prose
So I am going for my pre-op today before my c-section tomorrow. Afterwards, I plan on hunting down a priest and going to confession. Would it be appropriate at this point to ask for the sacrament of the sick, even though I am not sick?? I know that there are pregnant blessings and delivery blessings, but if something goes wrong in surgery, it seems appropriate to have the sacrament done. Opinions? I don't want to look like an idiot if I ask the priest.
Resurrexi
"The anointing of the sick can be administered to any member of the faithful who, having reached the use of reason, begins to be in danger of death by reason of illness or old age." (CIC, can. 1004 §1)
VeniteAdoremus
Hm. The ideal situation, of course, would be to have the priest in the operating room*. I don't think you can get the Sacrament "just in case", but it's a bit of a grey area.
Maggyie
I think any time you are going under (non-local) anesthesia it is appropriate to receive the sacraments.
CatherineM
I have received it each time I have had surgery. The church acknowledges that there can always be something that goes wrong. It is also to give you the strength to endure.
StColette
Prose, I believe you should receive it. Many things can happen with a c-section or for any surgery for that matter. Call your priest and ask what he thinks about the situation, if that will make you feel more at ease about having it done. If he feels that it is appropriate, which I'm sure he will, he will tell you to come in to see him.
Lilllabettt
When I was in the hospital, I found out they had a Catholic chaplain on staff who does that all day; he just goes from patient to patient scheduled for surgery. When I was a Sister, we got annointed whenever there was anesthesia used, even just for wisdom teeth. Go for it.

prose
Well, I was thinking that maybe I could ask for it after confession with whatever priest I go to...
StColette
I had the anointing of the sick when I was in labor with Aaron, because of the complications with the placenta (I ended up having placenta abruptio). I truly believe that the grace from the anointing of the sick and receiving the Eucharist the day of delivery saved the little man. He was very blue because his oxygen was cut off because of the placenta abruptio and his cord was wrapped twice around his neck and once around his abdomen. We could have easily lost him or he could have suffered some serious brain injuries because of the lack of oxygen.
