franciscanheart
Although the length of labor varies considerably, women experiencing their first full-term childbirth usually have the longest labors. About half will exceed 12 hours, and 2 in 10 will last longer than 24 hours. After the first baby, labor is usually shorter. Three-quarters of women deliver within 12 hours, and only one in 50 labor for more than 24 hours. So while she's been laboring a while, it's nothing too uncommon.
Yeah, I know that longer labors are very common with first time births. But she's way over the 24 hour mark. She's been in labor since 2am yesterday morning lol We're going on around 34 hours now. Labors that drag on for that amount of time have complications of their own, which is why I'm concerned. franciscanheart
I'm not sure where she's delivering or what have you, but don't they usually do emergency c-sections at like 36 hours?

And this is over 24 hours since she had regular 1-min contractions every 3 minutes. And hughey, she's having a home birth, AFAIK.
She's doing a home birth with a midwife, which is adding to my nervousness that labor has gone on for so long. I'm not sure about the c-section part. I think it depends upon the doctor. I know of one that'll wait until around 40 hrs until doing a c-section as long as the baby isn't under too much distress.

From what I've heard (from Icey), this midwife is very experienced, so I'm sure she'll get Laura & the baby the care they need. But nerve-wracking nonetheless.
Good point. I think my mother thought I was nuts for wanting to go as natural as possible, since she had epidurals with all three of us. Of course, I'm allergic to the epidural and a lot of other local anaesthetics, and a lot of pain meds make me sick. I'm at the music faculty getting a university wireless signal until I get my own intarwebs on Wednesday. Anywho, yay Luthien! Dedicated even during labour! I hope it goes well... where's L_D anyways? I'm surprised he didn't start the thread...
franciscanheart
well i hope, for her sake, the baby comes sooner rather than later. i did some more reading and poking around and apparently even 40+ hours of labor isn't so a-typical. it's not necessarily the norm, but it's no reason for panic or over-concern.
