Virtually everyone recognizes that our current health care system is in need of reform, we just disagree on how to go about fixing it. The protesters aren't there to defend insurance companies, but rather to protest a massive governmental takeover of our health care system. We've seen the way it works in your country and don't want any part of it.
actually frankly almost no one in the states has any clue about how the canadian system works and how we feel about. seriously.
I do know And it works pretty darn well for you all; although a Canadian friend once made me laugh because she was utterly shocked at medical expenses in America, even with insurance. And yeah, Canada at any given moment, if memory serves, has a good portion of its active military forces engaged in United Nations peacekeeping operations, if not leading them. Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire (retired) comes directly to mind, nice guy if you ever get to meet him. He was in the unenviable position of being the head of peacekeeping troops in Rwanda during the genocide...his calls for more troops were rebuffed, his forces downsized, his calls for ammunition and other vital supplies ignored; he was forced to watch from the compound he and his men fortified as militias executed Tutsis before them, because if he had tried to save them, the entire United Nations contingent (and the Tutsis they were sheltering in the compound) would have been overwhelmed and killed. He was lauded as a hero for his actions, and rightfully so, but that didn't stop his PTSD; even at one point attempting suicide unsucessfully. General Dallaire was medically released from the Canadian military in April 2000 due to PTSD, and is now Special Adviser to the Canadian Government on War Affected Children and the Prohibition of Small Arms Distribution. He's continued on, despite the horrors he witnessed in Rwanda, perhaps even due to them, to work with so many humanitarian causes around the world ranging from those I just mentioned, to testifying before International Tribunals to convict people for war crimes in Rwanda's genocide, to rallies for Darfur. Oh, and he currently sits as a Senator representing Quebec.
