A Few Questions From A Frustrated Person

1) For all of you people who payed for your school with a full time job: How did you do it? I'm making it, but I always feel soooo worn out. I'm in class most days 8-10 hours a day. During the weekend I put in 22-27 hours of work.

2) This is a kind of extension of the first but: for those of you with a SO far away at the time, how did you do that? It seems like to get everything done, I would have to just stop talking to him at all and I am just not willing to that. And I don't know how to make it better. And it isn't good for him, either. And that upsets me.

3) This is a kind of stupid question but this year in the girls dorms, they furnished us with literal plywood boards. There is a frame, a plywood board with a hard mattress on top. Even with foamy stuff, I keep waking up with my legs and arms and face numb. There are sharp pains shooting down my spine and from my hip to my knee. I have scoliosis and have constant back pain anyway, but this is pretty extreme even for me and some days I can barely move my neck. It's not from sleeping weirdly. (I just felt a twitch in my neck. THat's new... =/ ) This makes me upset because I work to pay room and board and the food makes me sick and the beds cause me to ned to go to the chiropractor, which I cannot afford. Also, this directly affects my major (voice). Idk what to do. I know they have extra beds that we had last year because they are not very many students in that dorm. Should I email my RD and see if I can switch that out possibly? Should I just suck it up and shut up about it? :idontknow:

And even if you have no suggestions, a hail mary would be nice. Tonight was a kind of bad night and I feel like an utter failure.

I tried to schedule as many of my classes as possible within a block of time. So I went to class basically straight through from 8 to 12, with no breaks in between, four days a week and then I had one full day on campus. That helped me to schedule the rest of my time effectively. It helped that I was a commuter. No time to goof off-- I had to catch the bus or be late to get my kid from school. Also, I could get some sleep on the bus.

regarding #3: Do you have an advisor or a vocal coach in your academic program who can put in a word, if this is affecting your voice? Also if you have scoliosis can you get a doctor to say that you need to sleep on a real bed? I would advise you NOT to shut up about it. As you said you are paying for these services.

To be honest, I look back on that time of my life and I have NO idea how I did it. But I did it. Many prayers for you... take care of yourself.

Well... I have 11 classes. So they are all in a block of time. They just take ALL day. heh I think my advisor could/would say something. I can ask him.

You need to get what I like to call a "fluffy mattress pad." It's placed under your current mattress pad, because that keeps it from slipping (you know, the protective sheet that you tuck under your actual mattress).

I agree with little_miss_late. its affecting you're paying for it, and if it's messing with your voice, it would really stink if you couldn't complete your major after all the time and work. :(

I wrote out a long reply but pressed "back" and now it's gone <_< Condensed version:

1. In Australia the government pays for our Uni tuition until we graduate and then they just add the tuition onto our usual tax and take it back. Is there anything similar in America? Perhaps apply for a scholarship? Or does your government give out student pensions? Failing all that, if the situation becomes dire, you could do your course part time.

2. I used to have a long distance boyfriend too, I know it can smell of elderberries sometimes. There aren't many practical tips I can give you but keep in mind that a boyfriend far away is better than no boyfriend at all. Also make the most of the precious time you have together! Especially over the holidays, lots and lots of hanging out. Making up for lost time. Think about the future and where this path, hard as it may be, will lead you and Jeff. That if you put in the effort now you will reap the rewards in due time. I'm sure he knows that too.

I know that wasn't really practical, but it's some stuff to keep in mind when it all gets a bit too much.

3. Yeah, you don't have to put up with that. One of my best friends has the same condition and I see how hard it is for her. I'm sure if you explain to the Uni that you have scoliosis they can work something out.

And whenever you're feeling like croutons remember that "this too will pass". :)

I don't have much to add to what the others have said, but the mattress issue is now a health issue for you. Yes talk to you hall director or call housing and see what they can do. I got through school working full time in the summer and part time during the school year with scholarships. I also worked during all my school holidays. But I came out debt-free. I was very blessed.

Well... I'm praying, even though I don't really have a lot of advice.

As for #3 though... Don't just smell of elderberries it up if its affecting your voice and giving you such serious back pains. They should be able to accomodate you... it's not like you're asking for a king size bed in a suite. It sounds like sleeping on the floor with a sleeping bag would be better for you. But you shouldn't have to... I can't see why they couldn't get you one of the old beds. Definitely talk to someone about that. I'm sure they'd want to help you if they knew it was a serious problem. But if you don't tell anyone, they'll never know.

Well, I didn't pay for my school entirely by myself so I can't really answer that question. (I worked for the school and all my pay was funneled back into my tuition but my parents also helped out, and I had loans and grants.)

When Matt and I were long distance with both of us in school we took breaks from studying so we could talk every couple of days (and we e-mailed at least once a day). Even if it was only 15 or 20 minutes that time was of tremendous importance. I did a lot of homework and reading between classes so that I could have extra time in the evening. I was lucky that he was only a 5 hour road trip away so he came to visit fairly often, but still... the time apart smells of elderberries and there came a point where I was more willing to let some reading slide than my relationship.

As to the bed situation, YES, talk to someone about getting a better bed/mattress. Get a note from a doctor if you have to, but by all means necessary get them to fix the problem. You shouldn't be forced to pay to make yourself sick.

Do you have an Md or a chiropracter? If you don't check with your student health services. You can deal with many deprivations as a student, but not when it comes to your health!

If you have trouble getting a decent bed, please remember to pull the ADA card. You have a recognized disability, and they must provide an accommodation, or they can be sued federally for $50,000 for each occurrence. That goes for the food issue as well.

For the amount of money you are paying, you could be at Julliard practically. I'm afraid I have a tendency to get frisky when confronted with people taking my money and giving me croutons in return. My frisky look is scary.

Find an engineer, and steal their bed. It's the kind of thing they'd do themselves if they weren't drunk, so really, it's probably just payback for something they've already done.
