Isn't More Gun Control The Obvious Solution? Yes, Yes It Is.

Luckily my outlook is not actually quite this dark. The light at the end of the tunnel here is what I was getting at originally, and one of the reasons that those pictures kind of resonate with me.

Even though society had fallen apart and self destructed all around them, even though the 'authorities' could not and would not help, even though left and right they were losing their livelihoods to violent people, they themselves on their own initiative maintained a certain level of sanity both for themselves and their family and friends. They brought order back, at least a semblance of it, in a situation where it should have been impossible to do so. They refused to let violence take over, so they resisted it. And I think they won an important moral victory in a landscape scorched by racism and thuggery. They defended their dignity and rights by supporting each other.

You know what's sad? Even after saying I am out of props, when I read this I completely forgot and tried to like it.

Some white cops beat the hell of a black man and were acquitted which sparked race and class based riots in LA in the early 90's

When half my students in CRIM 101 had never heard of Rodney King or the LA Riots, I essentially threw out my planned comments for the next ten minutes and pulled up the video of the beating and gave a mini-lecture on what happened after and then ended up having a really nice discussion for the rest of class. Even my blatantly racist kid was going, "That :censored: ain't right!"

Can't we all just get along? :P

Nah it's weird, my students DID know about Jonestown, but not Rodney King.

Wait, is that a thing, where you are? The token hardcore racist kid in class?

What are you, 5?

Sixteen. If the LA riots happened in the early nineties, that means they happened before I was born (1996).

Oh my goodness, dairygirl, you must be right. Look at this CNN article totally proving your point:

Sandy Hook shooting: What happened?

Twenty-six people -- 20 students and six adults -- were shot and killed at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14. Details continue to emerge about what precisely happened. Below is a timeline of events that compiles the latest reporting.

Before events at the school

At some point before THE GUNS went to the school, investigators believe THEY killed THEIR mother IN ORDER TO LIBERATE THEMSELVES FROM HER BONDAGE.

THE semi-automatic AR-15 assault rifle made by Bushmaster and pistols made by Glock and Sig Sauer THEN went to the elementary school wearing black fatigues and a military vest, according to a law enforcement official.

The above weapons are similar to the ones WHO KILLED 26 PEOPLE AT SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY.

Classes were under way at the school. Approximately 700 students were present.

Earlier this year, the school principal, Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, ordered a new security system installed that required visitors to be visibly identified and buzzed in. As part of the security system, the school locked its doors each day at 9:30 a.m.

The door was locked when the GUNS arrived.

Authorities now know the GUNS "literally (shot) THEIR entrance into the building," Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy said.

Inside the school

Hochsprung heard loud pops. She, school psychologist Mary Sherlach and vice principal Natalie Hammond went out to investigate.

Only Hammond returned from the hallway alive. She was wounded.

At about 9:30 a.m., as announcements were read over the loudspeaker to the students, shots were heard across the school. Students described being ushered into bathrooms and closets by teachers after hearing the first shots.

THE GUNS moved toward two classrooms of kindergartners and first-graders, police said.

In one classroom was Lauren Rousseau, a substitute teacher who was filling in for a teacher out on maternity leave. The GUNS shot all 14 students in the classroom, law enforcement officers said.

In another classroom, Victoria Soto, 27, moved her first-grade students away from the door. The GUNS burst in and shot her, according to the father of a surviving student. Six students were killed in that classroom.

First responders arrive

At the police station, dispatchers began to take calls from inside the school. Authorities say the first emergency call about the shooting came in at "approximately" 9:30 a.m.

"Sandy Hook school. Caller is indicating she thinks some GUNS ARE shooting in the building," a dispatcher told fire and medical personnel, according to 911 tapes.

Police and other first responders arrived on scene about 20 minutes after the first calls.

Police report that no law enforcement officers discharged their weapons at any point.

The GUNS took THEIR own LIVES, police said. THEY TURNED ON THEMSELVES AND SHOT THEMSELVES in a classroom as law enforcement officers approached, officials said.

Twenty students, ages 6 and 7, and six adults were killed at the school.

Police secured the building, ensuring no other GUNS were on site (EXCEPT THEIR OWN, WELL-BEHAVED GUNS, OF COURSE). Police then escorted students and faculty out of the building to a nearby firehouse.

As reports of the shooting made their way around town, frantic parents descended on the firehouse where the children had been taken.

By nightfall, the firehouse became a gathering point for parents and family members whose loved ones would never walk out of the school.

20 minutes for first responders to arrive.

that tells the story there and nullifies every single thing you posted DG.

Every teacher onsite that would have been armed had it been allowed (even if just one) would be the first responders. Guaran-durn-tee you it wouldn;t have taken them 20 minutes....

Without guns you wouldn't need to worry about all of that in the first place.

guns, knives, clubs, shark with frikkin laser beams.....no diff.   before there were guns people still managed to find ways to inflict death unto each other.  they will do so after we have moved on to other weaponry.

posting a sign in front of a school stating 'this is a gun-free zone' is telling whack jobs 'this is a free shooting gallery'

why do all the maroons think that making guns illegal is going to stop psychopaths and criminals from obtaining and using them?  I can see it now....

Nutjob: i wall kill kill kill!  lemme go get a gun and shoot em all! i'm a serial pedophile rapist career criminal

liberal (also a nutjob): nonono.  that's illegal to own a gun

Nutjob: oh darn.  don;t want to break a law while killing everyone to death.  guess i'll go pick flowers instead

liberal: kumbyah!

And thus our problem — why are we so damn concerned about guns themselves instead of taking care of the flooping societal problems that lead to these events in the first place?
