Being no one actually saw John Paul II actually do corporal punishment, but there are only those who assume that what they heard is what he was doing, for all we know, he was merely working out.

I think that is the weirdest response that could possibly be made to this thread.

If John Paul II did perform acts of corporal mortification it is a private matter between him and God.

That's an interesting comment since types and number of physcial mortifications are almost always included in hagiography.

John Paul II was a pretty cool guy, but i am having some serious trouble envisioning him rocking out on a Bowflex.

He was quite a sportsman in his youth.

Well being athletic, like he was, and working out for the sake of working out are very different things.

Well, he was an athletic sort. He did mountain climbing and skiing.

You have to stay in shape for those activities.

+1 haha, I was imagining something like that too. lol. Anyway, I'm sure the mortification hypothesis is a better fit with the evidence. haha.

The point to keep in mind is that John Paul's penances, whatever they were, were private. His life didn't revolve around penances, nor did he try to push his penances onto other people. So my response to this story is, "Oh, interesting." That's it.

I agree. Personal corpral penance should be between an individual and God. I believe as long as the sanctity of the body is remembered and respected during this form of prayer, it is alright. Allowing ourselves to become uncomfortable everyonce and awhile reminds us of how Christ became so small that he sunk to humiliation for the sake of us.

Maybe he was practicing how to cross-check heretics with his hockey stick?

Well compared to some of the nonsense people like to believe, its would be more believable that he was making slap shots.

Here's a fun fact for you: the official sport of Canada isn't hockey, it's hitting heretics with hockey sticks. Very complex game; the scoring is extremely involved.

You've probably never seen a broadcast before because 99% of the camera and broadcast equipment in Canada is from the advent of television and isn't compatible with American technology. The other 1% of used by hockey, because Americans like that too.
