Varg Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Tried to work Islam into this topic somehow. Couldn't. Sorry. I think that nuclear power is misunderstood by a lot of people. They point to Chernobyl, but I just point to the fact that the plant at Chernobyl was built and maintained by Soviets, which means it was built badly by someone who was drunk. And had an awesome hat...But whatever. Nuclear power has become a lot safer and Communism is dead now so they don't allow underqualified vodka-swilling people run plants. The average person creates one teacup full (yep, typical Britisher has to compare everything to tea and tea receptacles) of nuclear waste in their WHOLE lifetime. It's pretty much carbon neutral and much more efficient than both fossil fuels and renewable energy sources. So, what do you say?
ardillacid Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 The next generation of nuclear power plants are exciting

I read a good article in a newsletter some time ago that got me interested in it. I'll see if I can find it.
goldenchild17 Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 http://www.hillsdale.edu/news/imprimis/archive/issue.asp?year=2008&month=02 I think this was it. I don't know how sound it is, but it made sense to me at the time.

Though I think that probably goes for just about everyone. I'm also pro-war (when is needed and viable) and yet still consider myself to follow many of the "hippie" peace ideals. It's probably a contradiction, but it works for me. and yeah, granola is pretty awesome
you do realize that the soviets and eastern bloc countries ran 100's of power plants and like only one went critical? Lol I remember in Bulgaria when we joined the EU those Europeans looked at our power plant and were like "WTF, how does that POS still work/hasn't gone critical". They are a lot safer than some people claim, the only problem is the waste. A better question would be on where the waste goes, is it moral to dump it overseas or shold one only dump it in his own country.
Vincent Vega Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 I'm pro-nuclear power. Perfectly safe, as long as it's done...well,safely.
Apotheoun Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009
. . . the only problem is the waste. I think that waste material produced in a country should have to stay in that country.
Nihil Obstat Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 There's been some fairly good progress made in long term storage underground in properly designed bunkers. If that can be done cost effectively, it's a good medium-term solution. I'm sure it would be better to find a way to convert radioactive materials into not-radioactive materials though.
CatherineM Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 I guess I don't have a problem with them. I had a problem with the one they were building in Cuba. First it was a graphite one, and second, they were putting it together with cardboard tubes and tape.
Varg Posted December 13, 2009 Author Posted December 13, 2009 See the OP for my opinion on Commie nuclear power
Archaeology cat Posted December 13, 2009 Posted December 13, 2009 Yeah, provided there's a viable option for storing the waste (or, better yet, converting it somehow), I'm all for it. I do not think people should be like the Malon and dump antimatter waste in other territories.
Nihil Obstat Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 It would be cool to save up nuclear waste for a few hundred years, then launch it in a rocket to smash into an asteroid. It would be expensive in the short term, but spread out over enough time it may be feasible.
