What Do You Think About The President Dropping Funding For Nasa ?

I just told my husband and he hit the roof. He may be Canadian, but he did grad work in Space Science at North Dakota, and was an astronaut applicant. The frost bite damage he got while looking for meteorites for NASA in Antarctica knocked him out of the program. He said if nothing else, there is national pride at stake that you can't put a price on. It occurred to me that is one thing Obama can't have because he wasn't raised in America. While we were sitting in classrooms watching TV of moon shots, he was in school in Indonesia. The founding fathers assumed that those who were native born would have that national loyalty when becoming president. In their time though, most people born in America were also raised there.

I saw online that India is planning a mission to the moon by 2016. We're going to be beaten by India.

Zefram Cochrane wasn't in NASA.

True, but it is possible that such space programs paved the way for his work.

NASA's cut spending is unfortunate but inevitable, it's purely a cosmetic thing because Obama wants to look like he's "tightening the belt" during these times but really isn't.

I am concerned by the fact that Obama's spending proposals will increase the national debt over a period of two years by nearly as much as the entire eight years of the Bush administration.
SERIOUSLY. And it makes his proposed "spending freeze" totally laughable and pointless. Yet at the same time he's angered progressives in doing so. What a genius.

That's okay, he's a democrat. Bush wasn't.

You know, on the one hand, NASA funding doesn't make the greatest sense in our current economic state, but that can't be Obama's reasoning because he's just going to spend the money elsewhere on less noble projects.
Kinda what I was thinking. When Bush wanted us to go to Mars and the moon again I was against it as I figured we were not in a good state as a nation to be wasting money to revisit somewhere we've been before, and I don't see too many benefits from visiting Mars other than being the first to be there. However as you stated, Obama is allocating the money to other areas that are just as wasteful if not more.
I think Obama's only going to alienate more people. Jennie watched a bit of his speech and we got the sense he still thinks he's campaigning, which is a good sign, because it means he's on defense and damage control.
He's denying it all, but if you read between the lines, he knows his change ship is scrapping rocks and water is coming in. :smokey: . Your right, he is campaigning. Why focus on jobs and treat health care like a third class citizen? Wasn't this the same healthcare that he wanted passed last summer and have a bill on his desk by Christmas? :santa: All of a sudden it's taking a backseat....

Funding NASA doesn't get the votes like redirecting funds toward social programming. This is politics, not altruism. This is Washington DC, not the inside of Roddenberry's head.

..well..look at it this way...no more shuttles exploding and killing all our astronauts... i always felt that program needed to be grounded...

Yeah, a 98.2% safety rate is just awful.

I'm just glad the stats on highway safety are so much higher...after all, I'd hate to see cars be outlawed.

...well, there are millions of cars on the highway, compared to the few shuttles NASA managed...

...and involutarily destroyed...

sometimes I wonder if God really wanted man to be exploring space...I mean, if He stopped the Tower of Babbel, because it was reaching to the heavens...how does He feel about space exploration?

This is horrible.

We have a Christian duty to examine all of God's creation, including stars, planets, asteroids, our moon, and other moons. The answer to better understand our God could be out there.

Not to mention the solar system is really really cool, and the more we learn, the cooler it becomes.

I think it would depend on the intent. If people explore space to glorify humanity in itself, it wouldn't be pleasing to God. However, people also carry out experiments and other things in space that can advance technology and be of benefit to humanity. If the intent is noble and service-minded and can aid the common good, I don't think God would be opposed to it any more than he would man learning to fly.

Airplanes are safer than cars. Better start flying everywhere.

Shall we compare the calculations and engineering that it takes to send a man to the moon, and return him back safely? What about all the math involved with rocketry? Given all the statistics it takes to explore space, and we do it with a 98% rating...that's really good. If you drive your car everyday for a hundred days in an unfriendly, unsuitable environment to support human life, and you drive hundreds and thousands of miles away into this environment, and you come back 98 of those times, and have a couple instances where something goes wrong but you get yourself back alive anyway (Apollo 13), would you consider it overall a success or a dismal failure?

How did God feel about Columbus and all those other explorers exploring the New World? What's the difference between exploring the New World (North America) and space?

NASA's funding shoujld've been cut decdes ago. They've wasted tens of bazillions of dollars - some good has, indeed, come out of it, but nothing approaching what they've spent. And every dollar spent on looking for little green peoples on the moon has been a dollar NOT spent on food, clothing, housing, education, or transportation for honest-to-God peoples right down wthe street.

This! He is backpedaling bigtime in an attempt to win over so many supporters that have since been disappointed. He's like a cheating boyfriend. (At least, from what I've seen friends go through.) "We'll make it work this time! Give e another chance!" Spare me.

This have something to do with the fact that a million dollar space rover is stuck in martian soil and is now basically useless?

I think astronomy is fascinating... I really do. But I do think NASA is overfunded.

Do you know a bunch of college students sent a basically regular camera to space several months ago and took pictures of the atmosphere for a little over 100 dollars? The quality was of course somewhat inferior to what NASA has done... the point is, because it's NASA, no one questions whether or not they use their funding responsibly. I find it highly likely if a couple of Science majors could do essentially the same thing for a tiny percentage of that cost, NASA could surely cut back on how much it spends.

NASA is also notoriously bad about it's use and protection of it's equipment. Do you know that a NASA camera worth hundreds of thousands of dollars was left unclaimed in the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, AL for like, two months before the Baggage Center opened it, realized what it was, and returned it? Seriously? That is a gross abuse of very costly equipment. It's unacceptable.

"In addition to recognizing NASA’s innovative scientists, engineers, and technologists, the Board has produced a detailed record of NASA’s technological achievements throughout the years. These technologies continue to have a tremendous effect on the U.S. economy. The 2003 ICB annual report estimated that the extraordinary impact of just a few of these inventions on the U.S. economy and world commerce was more than $200 billion, and the aggregate of all 98,000 awards that the Board has granted throughout its fifty-year existence is conservatively estimated to have contributed more than half a trillion dollars in wealth to the economy and enabled technology that will change how we work and live. More importantly, the Board recognizes NASA’s finest technical talent, whose expertise covers more than forty fields of science and technology, and makes them more readily available to the public."

and this
"Nasa scientists have pioneered more than 6,300 technologies during their bid to understand space that are now routinely used in day-to-day living."

Because one person made an accident and misplaced a camera does not mean we fault the whole business.

In less than a year the federal debt will exceed the nation's GDP for the first time in our country's history. America is quickly becoming a modern version of the Weimar Republic.
