Angry Parish Erupts At Bishop

Disrespectful to shout out in Mass such as the congregation did here. While it seems the Bishop has his own personal agenda, and not Christ's, technically he is the bishop and deserves the respect of the office.

That much being said, the debate should not have taken place in front of Christ.

As much as I hate to see the passion directed disrespectfully toward the bishop and the fact that it is occuring within the Church...some small part of me is really glad that there are still churches full of passionately Catholic people in Europe. If these places can just sustain themselves by keeping their kids Catholic for the current generation...

I have a lot of emotions when I watch that video and as others here have noted one hates to see disrespect to any bishop really. But the outcome of this affair will embolden others who are experiencing similar problems I think. And part of me doesn't really blame them.

Ash Wednesday

The rainbow vestments weren't as bad as I thought they would be -- I was expecting something like this:

Link because image won't post

But I could definitely see how people might associate that with negative connotations. That being said, what a beautiful church. I am happy to see the bishop give way and for the parishioners and I'd probably be upset to see the life of what must be a real sanctuary disrupted as well.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! (at how traditional priests are trampled on, but not during the mass)

The liturgy has its source in ancient tradition, which comes from the Lord Himself, and not in liturgical committees, nor even does it find its source in the bishops, who are merely called upon to guard it faithfully.

The laity have shouted down hierarchs in Church before. The Church during the first millennium was far more raucous than people think. :)

The irony here is that this particular parish is packed with people, and the bishop has chosen to do something that clearly offends the liturgical sensibilities of a large majority of the members. You would think that a bishop in France would want to encourage the growth of the parish, but this looks like it will ultimately kill that local Church.

It is quite ironic...many of the detrimental things that have happened in the Latin Rite liturgy over the last few decades have had the frivolities and liberal leanings of the priest and bishop as their source rather than any major lay movement. It seems the hierarchy of the Latin Church has been at odds with itself/tradition for some time. The progressivisim of the episcopacy is hopefully coming to an end with more conservative appointments and a more traditionally minded younger presbyterate.

My wife's family's parish priest said one time over dinner "I've been waiting 44 years for God to send our diocese priests like this" referring to the recently ordained. He then said "It is a genuine miracle these guys were able to sneak through the seminary considering their conservative points of view."

I was a member of a Latin parish that experienced something very much like this sad episode back in the early 1990s, and so I too can understand the feelings of the parishioners in the video.

We had a very devout and orthodox priest who was forced to retire, and who was then replaced with a priest who openly advocated the homosexual lifestyle. It was so bad that the parochial vicar not only left the parish because of the disagreements he had with the new pastor, but left the diocese in order to be incardinated in another diocese. The bishop's actions destroyed the parish, which lost half of its members over a period of two years. I can only say that it was like watching the illness and death of a family member seeing that parish fall apart.

Interesting article.
An official source would be good. Even if it is official, in my personal opinion it's extremely ill-advised.

Unless the rainbow is a homosexual symbol exclusively in North America, I suppose...

So obviously we are going to let the world decide what should represent what.

Obviously, we are thinking too much about what society thinks and not what He thinks.

Well, Rexi I think your response is too BLAND! They are a HORROR!
Granted of course, that the rainbow is certainly a Godly symbol as of course we know from the story of Noah. But nowadays, it symbolizes something else and many people are bothered by it as a liturgical vestment.

Than does it matter if the people are "bothered" by it?

I think, not.

The problem I have with rainbow vestments is that they are not traditional, either in the Roman Rite or the Byzantine Rite.

Rainbow is not a liturgical color in the Roman Rite.

If a someone wants to wear a chasuble during the celebration of the Roman Rite, it should be white (or alternatively, on great feasts, silver or gold), red, green, violet, rose, or black.

EDIT: It seems that Apotheoun beat me in saying basically the same thing. :)

Let's put a big red hammer and sickle on the doors to the sanctuary.

The red for the Blood of Christ by which we are redeemed; the sickle for the harvest of the wheat in which we find our Salvation; the hammer for the fact that Jesus, as Divine Carpenter, built the New Covenant.

Who cares what else people associate it with.
