Thy Geekdom Come Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010
There are plenty of people less catechized than us out there though and most everyone has internet access. Who knows when filth like this will be the last straw in pushing a weakly Catholic person over the edge into thinking the Catholic Faith is absurd beyond redemption. I don't think anyone on here would be spiritually weakened by this tract of course...except in the sense that they are preying on the weak of Faith and by being the #1 hit on Google they are finding the filth first.
I know. I'm a catechist, lol. Regardless, though, my point was that I hate when anti-Catholics make such shallow arguments. I mean, I much prefer when they make an argument that actually shows they respect us as intelligent people capable of reason. When they say things like, "why do you worship a piece of bread?" I always think to myself, "wow...you've really been brainwashed into thinking we're that dumb, huh? You think if I thought that was a piece of bread I'd be worshiping it? Duh! I don't believe it's a piece of bread, so your question is silly and assumes I'm inept."
I agree with your frustration...but as the tract I posted states "This is war" and they'll pick off our uncatechized and our weak of faith and they'll even used our sacred language and Mary's color to subvert the trusting nature of those who don't really understand the transubstantiation because they've never had the benefit of good parenting or your excellent catechetical instruction. It wasn't that long ago that I was living in a college dorm and the Non-denom proselytizers would bring pizza in and sit down and start dismantling the Catholic faith piece by piece. And they often at the end of the day reverted to this level of condescension and shallowness and subversion...and there were a lot of people that were Catholic who fell into their trust and were subverted by their pizza and niceties. 'This is war'...guerrilla warfare...and they'll use the color of Mary's purity to mess with a Catholic's head. I mean this in no pretentious way because not too long ago I was clueless about my own faith: there are PLENTY of Catholics who are inept and subverted by this. You and I may be simply insulted by the level of derogation present in this tract...but I knew plenty of kids who went to my Catholic high school where this would have just been more fuel on the fire of their distrust and disaffected view of the Church and its rules. I'm sure you know all this too since you are a catechist and have to deal with the uncatechized every single day. Sometimes I have to remind myself that there are a lot of Catholics who know way less than us and who lack the support we have in our Faith and when websites like this are the #1 hit on google and there are people actually printing this drivel on blue paper and putting it in the backs of Catholic Churches its a scary thing. And for the record, I have a TREMENDOUS amount of respect for your line of work. Edited February 20, 2010 by Veridicus

I wasn't Catholic when I was at UE, but one of my friends was (incidentally, she's one of the reasons I started looking into the Church), and there were a couple of people from the largest non-denom group there who really wore her down. She's no longer a practising Catholic. I pray she returns.
