Cherie Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I'm sure this topic has been posted a hundred times, but since I don't see any recent ones, I decided to post an "updated" version. For all those discerning religious life out there, which communities are you discerning with, or feel attracted to? Can you post a link to a website, if the community has one? I love to see the different charisms God is calling (or possibly calling) people to, and it's so inspiring to see all the beautiful religious communities. God bless, and know you all are in my prayers!
HisChild Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I wouldn't say I'm actively discerning these communities, but were I to be in a position to discern traditional religious life right now, these are two I'd definitely consider: THIS one, of course, because they combine the Carmelite charism and the Eastern Christian Liturgy. And then of course, THIS one which isn't really a specific order, per se, as it is simply Eastern Catholic. I see myself in a vocation more eremitic... but these two communities are lovely.

OnlySunshine Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I am not actively discerning, but I probably in the category of hopeful religious with some discernment issues . There are a few communities that I would consider a visit to in the future: Little Sisters of the Poor Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne Dominican Sisters of the Immaculate Conception
HisChild Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I visited the Little Sisters when I was with the Srs. of Life. Back then we had no active apostolate yet. I also visited the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne. LOL That's actually where I MET the Srs. of Life. But back then they had beige habits, not the blue you see today.

HisChild Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 They were so... (forgive me) heinous. LOL! Then we postulants were graced with the remaining fabric for our own uniforms. I felt like a blob of oatmeal.
The Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate have preference for the EF. (Right now in the U.S., the friar-priests are still getting used to it, but to my knowledge, everywhere else in the world they use the EF only.) I think at least once a week, the friars come to the convent and celebrate the EF Mass for the Sisters. And at the convent parish (St. Anthony of Padua), the priest is an Opus Dei priest (super holy as well!) and celebrates the EF Mass every First Saturday. They are of the "semi-contemplative" category, like the DSMME.
I LOVE FR. LANDRY!!!!!!!!!!!! (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) I can't believe someone else here KNOWS him, too!! He IS absolutely AMAZING, HOLY, and yes, a SAINT! He always offers himself for vocational direction/advice for those that visit the Sisters, so the Sisters always send discerners to him for direction, if they want it. I took him up on the offer. He gave me the best direction/advice regarding my vocation that I have ever received. Just remarkable. I'm STILL reaping the fruits of that conversation. Small world, indeed! Wow! I met him when I was with the Sister Servants of the Eternal Word in Birmingham, AL. He gave retreats there a number of years in a row, and I was able to have numerous wonderful conversations with him. All the Sisters were trying to sit next to him during the meals so we could hear him talk!!! I was Sr. Mary Faustina when I was there, so he told me he would remember me whenever he said a chaplet ... (AMAZING!!!) His retreats were literally the best I have ever attended. I truly believe the Holy Spirit speaks through him. After I left, when a family member was having some troubles and needed the prayers and encouragement of a saintly priest, the first person I thought of was Fr. Landry, so I referred her to him. She's been in contact with him a number of times, and each time she says she goes away feeling peaceful and trustful of God. And he told her he STILL remembers me when he says his chaplet! OOOh you are so blessed for having been given direction by him!!! He is so wonderful!!!

I've pondered this since the summer, but I suppose since things are vocationally falling into place for me, I'd like to let him know. I have no doubt that he's kept his promise of praying for me, as he has for you. Such a sincere, good, and HOLY priest! God bless him! I think the Holy Spirit resides in him 24/7. Chills, I tell you! CHILLS!
