Vulgar words aren't necessarily sins, there are just situations you shouldn't use them in. There are vulgar words which are sins, but c.rap is not one of them.
He didn't ask it if was a sin, he asked if it was bad. Technically vulgarities are bad. Not necessarily a sin, but definitely not good things to say. If you hear a 5 year old say "cra.p" are you going to tell them it's ok because it's a good word? No, you say "Don't say that, it's a bad word." In Theology 101 we were taught that there is a difference between vulgarities, cursing, and swearing (all terms people use universally to refer to "bad words"). Vulgarities are words like croutons, sh**, and the f-bomb. These may or may not be sins depending on context (and generally speaking saying a word isn't going to be a mortal sin). Cursing is saying "dam,n" which literally means you want something damned to hell (and, according to my professor, is always a sin on some level). Swearing is to take an oath, as in swearing to tell the truth with your hand on the Bible in court (which, obviously, isn't sinful in nature). All that said, I still use vulgarities more often than I'd like to admit. When I do so I also have to admit to the fact that what I say is bad.
I didn't forget blasphemy, it just wasn't part of that particular lecture. Blasphemy isn't often confused with swearing or vulgarities (which have actual distinctions between the terms).
It's a guy thing. You know any carpenters? You ever heard 'em talk? You know any fishermen? Ever heard how they talk? I take it that Jesus was pretty rough & tumble, being a carpenter and hanging around with fisherman and all. But I'd give a lady a little more consideration. And just as an aside, there is nothing "wrong" with the word c.r.a.p. except that this culture (and a good many others, too) says we shouldn't talk about that sort of thing in polite society. Doctors, nurses, mothers, fathers, and children talk about it pretty regularly (no pun intended), and I wouldn't say it (to Jesus or His mother) if I were being polite.
Ed Normile Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 I would rather hear the word c.rap come from a kids mouth over hearing the child say poo-poo. I would at least feel the kid would not be the other kids punching bag through life. Its amazing how we can invent words and then place a stigma upon the use of the word, thats mankind in its utmost simplicity, we strive for meaning then limit ourselves. ed
