I've just never witnessed a mass in a different Rite. God bless- LGLG
It is blessed bread, which has been dedicated to God during the proskomidia rite (i.e., the preparations at the prothesis table), but which has not been consecrated into the Body of Christ. This bread is often given out to those who have taken communion in order to ensure that all of the consecrated elements have been swallowed. It is sometimes also given out at the end of the Divine Liturgy to those who did not received holy communion. Edited May 28, 2010 by Apotheoun
let_go_let_God Posted May 28, 2010 Posted May 28, 2010 So it's a separate part of the mass which cleanses the mouth of any particles and acts as a spiritual communion for those who could not receive? God bless- LGLG

God bless- LGLG
It is not really a "part" of the liturgy; instead, it is simply something that can be done in order to make sure that people do not accidentally profane the Eucharistic mystery. Blessed bread (and in some cases blessed wine) will often be made available for communicants to consume immediately following the reception of holy communion, and the purpose is simply to clean the palate. At the end of the liturgy antidoron is often offered to everyone, but I do not think I would call it a "spiritual communion"; instead, the blessed bread is more like a vestigial element of the agape meals that often followed the Eucharistic liturgy in the early Church.
