Mercy me
Seriously who is catholicculture. Until this post I have never heard of them. Is it really a site that is trust worthy or is it a place that is more Catholic than the pope. I like Phatmass because if you have real questions or if you struggle with an issue you can discuss it and not be afraid that you will be attacked as a heathen. But rather your concerns can be addressed and the churches teachings are explained rather than hammered.
Nihil Obstat
Lol, with regards to those "movie reviews" they take issue with...... they're using the USCCB movie database as a guide. How many times have we bashed that guide?
Marie-Therese
Well, until today, I had never even heard of Catholic Culture. Fwiw. Any Catholic person who is orthodox ought to be perfectly capable of assessing the orthodoxy (or lack thereof) of any site they visit. I don't need an arbiter of culture to tell me what to read. Honestly, I prefer to use Focus on the Family's "Plugged In Online" as a guide for films. Much more accurate, in my opinion. I think it's poor judgment on Catholic Culture's part. Anyone who knows anything about Phatmass knows it's 100% orthodox.
IgnatiusofLoyola
I wonder if some people will now visit PhatMass because they think we're wild and crazy. Hope they won't be disappointed. Caveat: I have never posted (or even visited) the movie thread, so, for all I know, you ARE wild and crazy there.

Brother Adam
I for one am not "trashing" Catholic Culture. I really have never been very impressed with their site, and I wouldn't recommend it to someone else. I mean that's great if you like it, and it's not like I would tell someone that enjoyed using it that they shouldn't. As for it "going overboard with orthodoxy"... maybe in a way but only to a pretty shallow extent, in my opinion. The fact that they based a review of a forum on two posts about movies that were obviously not even very long threads, if we can't even find them, kind of speaks for itself---pretty superficial if you ask me. I think it was a superficial review of Phatmass, and I think a lot of what they have on their own site is pretty superficial.
Why are you not impressed with their site? Specifically why is it not worthy of being recommended? I am just curious. Because they gave phatmass a yellow flag? They have given my website a yellow flag before because I recommended a Catholic dissenter to professional catechists for review (like a theologian would study Arius) and they changed it after hearing my arguments back to a green. I call it trashing when people make comments about setting up a page on phatmass to 'get them back' and all anyone has had to say is negative. You would think we are talking about a radical group. CC is not going to be harmed if we retaliate against them in a more formal way, but it will make us look immature. CC and their parent group is much larger than phatmass. How is it shallow? What specifically about their library, new service, liturgical year, or commentary (especially) is shallow? Like I said, the grad student doing website reviews is being unfair here, but I feel like we are throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Looking beyond the website reviews, which is the weakest part of Trinity Communications, their resources are great and I know a lot of people who use them. I don't need an arbiter of culture to tell me what to read.
On the other hand, many of these groups look, sound, and even are "Catholic" by nature, but they are dissenting or heretical organizations. Having a lay website organization (since the USCCB isn't going to do it) is a great idea, and one that has been tried by others before, but never as well, even with its flaws. Look through some of their red flagged websites. Some may even surprise you. Many of the websites have a Catholic flavor, like American Catholic, Busted Halo, or Center for Ministry Development, and the average Catholic would think they were orthodox unless there was a resource to inform them otherwise. Catechesis has been so bad it is easy to get away with dissent and draw others into that dissent. Maybe you don't need a review site, but it has its place. Sternhauser
I wonder what rating they would give the Vatican's L'Osservatore Romano website? After all, they reviewed Schindler's List positively. And it's got nekkid people in it. And language. Lots of that. ~Sternhauser Edited June 5, 2010 by Sternhauser

Laudate_Dominum
Why were those movie threads hidden or deleted? They come up in a Google search but the topic id's are no longer valid. Who actually made them and what were they about? The quotes on the review make them sounds like spam.
