On the other hand, many of these groups look, sound, and even are "Catholic" by nature, but they are dissenting or heretical organizations. Having a lay website organization (since the USCCB isn't going to do it) is a great idea, and one that has been tried by others before, but never as well, even with its flaws.

Look through some of their red flagged websites. Some may even surprise you. Many of the websites have a Catholic flavor, like American Catholic, Busted Halo, or Center for Ministry Development, and the average Catholic would think they were orthodox unless there was a resource to inform them otherwise. Catechesis has been so bad it is easy to get away with dissent and draw others into that dissent. Maybe you don't need a review site, but it has its place.

I do agree, Brother Adam. My comment lacked some foresight. I made the error of assuming that people generally understand their faith, which is an obvious mistake. The overall lack of catechesis in the Church today is a large contributor to the sad state of our liturgical practice and the reason that an estimated 80 percent of self-affiliated Catholics do not attend Sunday Mass in the United States.

I have to admit, though, that I haven't heard of any of the websites you listed. Truthfully, a website named Busted Halo wouldn't be one I'd be drawn to. I am pretty selective in terms of my reading and I stick to a limited number of resources that I know to be orthodox. However, you are absolutely correct that we do need reputable, faithful resources on the web that provide those with less catechesis a source of reliable information.

Remarkable that phatmass would be linked with caution.

I have pointed people to this site for years and I mean years. From ages 14 to 80. High School Kids to a Bishop.

Fantastic site that I find totally in keeping with the Church. I don't see a reason for any other site whatsoever.

There will be at least a certain amount of heterodoxy on every discussion forum. If this website has been given a bad rating, maybe we could let this inspire us to greater fidelity and orthodoxy, in order to seek out our faults and improve it, regardless of whether their rating is justified or not.

Maybe it's because of our phallible spelling? ;)

+Pax Domini,
Ben

I think it would be hilarious to create a "Site review" section on phatmass and give CatholicCulture a yellow rating for "improperly rating phatmass as yellow". It would be our only site review.

this and phatmass coffee mugs / beer steins we will make happen.

Or, you could just respond, "Sorry, I do have my hands full with some unruly know-it-all kids that do not respect their elders. Please pray for me."

Put it in a bubble and let it go dude.
