How Sisters "do" Lent
During Lent the Church calls us to fast. What is the purpose of fasting? Christian sacrifice is not about giving to God what He would not have without us but rather it is about receptivity. God does not need our coffee or our jelly donuts. The real purpose of fasting is to make room in our hearts for Him. In choosing not to take a cup of coffee or a donut we are saying to the Lord, I abstain from trying to fill my own desires and give you the empty space in my heart to fill as You desire. The season of Lent is a season of Love. The Lord is speaking to each of us when He says; "So I will allure her; I will lead her into the desert and speak to her heart." Hos 2:16

I love photos of the cross in shadow! We rest in its shade and learn what it means to stay near JESUS at all times. And isn't that what Lent is all about - through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving - we learn how to remain united to the Lord in love. We receive the grace to stay near Him in good times and in bad - safe in the shadow of His Cross.
Friends, as this Lent begins, I am overcome by such a sense of HOPE. These forty days are sure to bring challenges, self-knowledge, and maybe some frustration, but these are days of GRACE, of NEARNESS to the LORD, of UNION of HEARTS, of SILENCE, and PERSPECTIVE.
Lent taken as a whole is not concerned with my actions so far as they belong to me. It directs attention away from self. During Lent, we ought to be taken outside of ourselves. All the time, our gaze will be fixed on one supreme act, the Passion and Death of Our Lord. Our purpose is an understanding and appreciation of that. It is to Calvary that we are going, for it is there that we shall find the perfection of our own individual lives, and, at the end of our journey together, our 'pains shall be turned into everlasting joy by the virtue of Christ's passion' (Mother Julian of Norwich, Revelations, c. 20), and we shall be able to cry triumphantly with St. Paul, 'With Christ I am nailed to the Cross. And I live, now not I, but Christ lives in me.'
I just would like to make it clear that the Sisters of Carmel in Colorado are a renegade order, meaning they are not approved by the diocese. The information about Lent is very traditional and interesting, but I just wanted to make people aware about their status in case anyone was interested in them. That is all. :)

Oh, thanks for pointing that out. I just saw the Lent page. :( This is kinda frustrating... without outside info like Phatmass, sometimes it's really hard to tell whether a community follows the church. I know the CMSWR communites are safe and those are the ones I look at. But I just was searching for lent reflections, and I saw Carmel, so was like... oh, that will be good. Super sad day.

Thanks again though for letting us know!

No, it's ok. It's not like you were promoting their order or anything. I actually like the reflections on that page. I used to really like their order (and how could you not with all those beautiful pictures of the nuns on their website? ;) ), but a good friend of mine informed me that they are in "irregular" status in the diocese, so I just thought it would be a good idea to make others aware that they are not in union with Rome. However, there have been talks between the Sisters and the Bishop that are positive and I pray that they will be brought back into Communion soon. :)

Oh dear. Those are the sisters I get my brown scapulars from. I had no idea they were not inline with the Church. Why are they in "irregular" status?

Oh no! I just bought a scapular from them as well!

So sad! I'm usually very good at finding out whether an order is approved or not! :cry2:

I know. I love the scapulars I get from them. They sew the strings in extra tight for me since I tend to be kind of hard on scapulars.

They are considered a "renegade" order. They are connected a schismatic religious order for men called the Servants of the Holy Family (the priests in the Servants offer Mass for the nuns). When the convent for nuns was built, they did not obtain permission before building it from the diocese, and they didn't apply to be a public association of the faithful. The diocese has issued several letters confirming that they do not have status in the diocese, and therefore, are not in Communion with the local ordinary or Rome. However, if you contact the Servants, they will tell you that they are indeed in union with Rome. There has been a bit of upheaval. The local ordinary has been trying to reconcile things, but so far, nothing has materialized.

As far as I know, it's not a sin to buy scapulars from the nuns, but I would definitely buy them somewhere else if possible. Let's pray that they are brought into Communion soon! :)

Also, it should be noted that nowhere on their website do they mention the Holy Father. I contacted them once a couple years ago, before I knew their status, and they said that they did not allow vocations from the Novus Ordo Mass. :ohno:
