Craftygrl06
I am considering joining a sorority, but I'm concerned about what constitutes a secret society. As Catholics we are not allowed to join secret societies, like the Freemasons, or whatever, but would a social sorority fall under the Catholic Church's definition of a secret society? If so, are there any Catholic sororities that are approved by the Church? Thanks so much
Pio Nono
JMJ 2/28 - Eighth Tuesday Craftygrl06, I'll probably be hung for this, but I'll go out on a limb and say, as a general rule, "No," as frats/sororities tend to be secret societies and we can't join those. Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
phatcatholic
it pretty much depends on the nature of the fraternity / sorority. some are "secret societies", some are not. some have very good intentions and do great things for the community, others are more concerned with partying. so, besides looking at how "secretive" it is, you also have to look at what the mission of the group is. the Knights of Columbus could be considered a fraternity, and they are perfectly legitimate and acceptible.
