When they were established, Columbus was discovering the new world, Ferdinand and Isabella were on the throne, and Spain was a youthful superpower competing with other colonial European nations. There is not much about them in the English language. In Spanish and Portuguese, however, this congregation of contemplative nuns has an almost iconic status, a place in history, and their distinctive habit is famous. Some are not cloistered nuns at all, but more like teaching sisters with a missionary apostolate. They definitely have an Internet presence, but again, not in English.
