“It is simply impossible to ensure that the insurance companies will not pass on those costs to the organizations and individuals who conscientiously object to their insurance policies covering abortion-inducing drugs, sterilization, and artificial contraception. In short, not only does the Administration not comprehend Catholic moral reasoning and the full-meaning of the principle of religious liberty, it does not even understand the basic economics of health-care insurance."

“The Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist plead with God to protect the ability for all Americans to freely exercise their religious liberty. The Sisters of Mary will offer up daily prayers with the intention that this unjust mandate be overturned, and we will do so until it is overturned.”

Yes, and they are praying a novena to place the U.S. under the Immaculate Conception and ask for Our Lady's intercession.

This was from before the compromise, but she has some great thoughts about women, healthcare, and contraception.

Sr. Caroline Keenan is head of the one of the largest Catholic hospital associations. Her musings and public statements certainly don't reflect the Roman Catholic church I know and love. In fact, in naming her the very first Person of the Year, the National Catholic Reporter honored Sr. Keehan because this year she did more than anyone else to change the perception that Catholics must oppose abortion. I wish the Bishops would call her on the things she's saying in the name of the Church. I'm SOOOO proud of the nuns/sisters who are speaking out against this horrible mandate by the cuirrent administration. Google her and read for yourself.

It's not just about birth control, abortions, and abortafacients. it's about our 1st ammendment rights. First they will legislate this abomination, then what's next? Legislating only 2 children per family? The elderly must be euthanized at 85 as they really serve no useful purpose after that (they just eat food that could be used to feed others, they take up valuable hospital beds, and use too much expensive medical care options )? The list of government legislated horrors could go on and on.

I've already written and spoken to my congresspeople several times and I've written the White House voicing my strong opposition to the "conscience clause" or lack thereof. I urge you to do the same. My income tax will probably be audited because I've been so vocal, but so be it!!!!

Sorry to have gotten on my soapbox this morning, but I'm really angered and outraged about this latest assault on our religious freedom.

The Sisters of Life one is really interesting. The mandate would force them to betray their vows.

As a result, this mandate would coerce each and every individual Sister of Life to betray her religious vows. We will be forced to pay for “services” that attack human life and deny the truth and beauty of human sexuality. This would directly contradict our special religious vow to “to protect and enhance the sacredness of human life,” and go against everything we believe in and have devoted our lives to. To us, it would be comparable to a law requiring a spouse to violate their marriage vows — an unthinkable intrusion upon a sacred promise.

Actually the mandate might force them to CHOOSE between betraying their vows or not getting health insurance. This is how serious their fourth vow is. And this is how this might be also for any Catholic or Christian willing to be faithful to the Gospel.

This is just a beginning of how things are getting. We too will have to get serious about our values and how we live them out; If we compromise with the first steps, what will be the next mandate be? We will be going downhill.

Please let us pray together, for our civil and religious leaders, and for fidelity to God's law for all of us.

If all people who believe that this mandate is not acceptable would stop taking any health insurance they would have to change it. But they know that most people will swallow it. We need to grow in awareness of what is going on, and in fidelity to our values. Again, let us pray for each other, and together.

Peace!

As I said on another thread, this is just the very first step in the systematic stripping of our rights as citizens and Catholics (or any religion for that matter). If the government and HHS succeeds in getting this mandate to stand, I shudder to think what's around the corner. Families mandated ala China to only have 2 children (hence upping the abortion rate even more), people who are over 80 must not be treated for illnesses, but be "humanely" euthanized (read: death with dignity) because resources and food and hospital beds are needed for those younger and more productive in society, those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes will be denied medication hence brining on a prolonged death (read euthanasia again), churches must hold services only 1 time per week so their buldings may be used in other ways for the good of society. The list could go on and on. No, it's not a page out of horror story, but real life scenarios that could be played out if this horrible mandate isn't stopped by the courts.

I've written and spoken to my congresspeople several times, and I encourage you to contact yours as well. I've also written to the White House (for what it's worth) and gotten the perfunctory form letter back that reeks of hypocrisy and fawning. Please write, pray, tell you friends and family to do the same. Things do change through the power of prayer and human intervention as well.
